Oh, not in the goody-goody ,sensevJoe was “air b oy .. . and full of mischief in the manner of small boys. But he was bright and manly fellow, respectful to his elders, loyal to his friends. Had a high sense of responsibility too (he was a paper boy and his earnings helped at home). Everybody felt bad when Joe. died, r<* Worst thing about it, it was so unnecessary.. . Joe shouldn’t have died. But when the auto hit Joe’s bike, the driver wasn’t man enough to stop and give‘him help. He was a “hit- skip” driver. So that when Joe was found already he had lost considerable blood. Then there were quick and merciful hands to succor him. There was the speeding ambulance to rush him to the hospital. But when they got there, Joe was “dead on arrival.” The doctor who signed the certificate said he could have been saved, if arrival had^been a few minutes earlier. A closed artery, a blood transfusion, and Joe)would soon have been good as new. That was the part that hurt.. . Joe could have been saved. The hospital just was too far away. Joe paid out his life in the e^xtramiles that separated him from swift medical attention. ~ .
