Farmers Apply Record Amount o f Fertilizer Use of commercial fertilizers reached a new high on Ohio farms in 1948. Total sales of 890,800 tons as compared with 775,512 tons in 1947, and 345,- 585 tons 10 years ago. Fertilizer sales have been on the increase every year for the past 10 years, and are likely to be even high in 1949. Increased use o f fertilizer' is °ne of the best ways farmers can meet steadily rising production costs. Fertilizer costs have not advanc ed in proportion to other farm ing evpenses, and at present prices, farmers can expect to re ceive $5. to $8. return in increase yields for every dollar spent for fertilizer. Rural economists at Ohio State University state that fertilizer costs have increased only 55rc since before World War II, while farm labor expense, for instance, has increased 2759b. Methoxychlor is being rec ommended .this year as a spray for dairy cows instead of DDT. Farm Families Urged To Participate _in _1949 —Spring Clean-Up Program Every farm family is being urged by -the Greene County Farm and Home Safety Council to participate in the 1949 Spring during the alst two weeks of Clean-Up program to be held April Attention is to be centered on removing all accident and fire hazards in the farm home, the granary, or any building on the barn, the machine shop, the farm or about the farmstead.
