On three-mmute t o t s Pat Col lier averaged 40 words per min ute and Norma mifch 37, all tests being perfect. Temperance Essays This week we are publishing two essays written by pupils for the temperance test recently. The first composition, by Don Tnmer, emphasizes the, effects o f drinking on our social insti tutions; the second essay, by Martha Richards, treats o f the effects o f alcohol on the individ ual. The Social Consequences Of Alcoholism Today the social consequences o f alcohol are more noticeable than ever before in the history o f this country. Divorce and crime are steadily on the up-grade mainly because o f alcohol. Families are broken up and Cedarville, O. Herald Friday March 10 , 1950 homes destroyed because some or all o f the members indulge a recent survey stated that al cohol was the contributing fac tor in their downfall. Divorce and crime today pre sent a two-fold menace to the se curity and welfare o f this na tion. I f they are to be checked, we will have to prevent the manu facture iOf alcohol fo r beverage purposes'. This can be accom plished if we support the organ izations that have been set up for this purpose, and insist that our congressmen lend their sup port in enacting law to prevent the use o f alcohol fo r beverage purposes. I f such legislation were put into effect, surely divorce and crime would drop at a rapid rate. Alcohol and You Alcohol is a detriment to you and to me i f we take it into our bodies. Yon may say, “ I only want to taste it; that thing of becoming a drunkard can't hap pen to me!” But it can. To any one who takes the first glass, there is danger o f creating the taste for alcohol. “ Well", you may say, “what's the harm if I do'.' Anyway it’s my badness." But when you be come a drunkard it is not only yourself you are harming, hut a!>o your family, your friends, your efficiency in your work and in tire community. The human body was not made to be treated the way it is when alcohol is used by the individual. Aleohoi tears down the nervous system, which not only controls itself, but also guides and con trols all the other systems; here fore when the nervous system is harmed, the whole body is af fected. When one takes alcohol into the body, the powers of re sistance and concentration are lowered so that the individual is unable to hold a responsible posi tion. Also taking alcohol into the body may produce a heart con- Sues on Note Ghenoweth Motor Co.,. Xenia, has brought suit against Frank C. Moxley of- Jamestown fo r §927.54, plus interest. Foreclo sure is also asked on a mortgage on an automobile. Divorce Granted Caroline M. Burrell has been granted a divorce from Marion A . on grounds o f neglect, and restored to her maiden name, Burnham. Wins Divorce Decree Laura May Kaley has been granted a divorce from Ralph on the grounds o f cruelty. Orders Partition In a case styled Lou B. Adkins vs. Earl Adkins the plaintiff has received an order to partition real estate. dition known as a “ beer" heart, —a greatly enlarged heart with weak muscles that can stand lit tle exertion. Although the yputh o f today may be greatly tempted by all the glittering advertisements seen everywhere, yet_ there are sor many harmless things to be enjoyed that it is not necessary to resort to pastimes having harmful effects. Alcohol is a mockery. It tries to make you think you are strong when really you’re weaker; smart when in reality you are dumb; and who is completely under its influence is an object o f pity to society. Why be fooled by a bev erage that is poison when we know all poisons are harmful, even causing death if taken in sufficient quantities. So why not eat and drink sub stances that are good and have food value; things which build up instead o f tearing down. Cases Dismissed The case o f Dorthy Shoemak er vs. Chaster R., and of clar ence Bayie33 vs. Althe Points have been dismissed. WANTED—WOOL, Top .prices. Lloyd Devoe, Clifton, Tel. 5329.
