Cedarville Magazine, Fall 2013

Cedarville Magazine | 3 Campus News PLACEHOLDER IMAGE COPY UNDER REVISION On October 4, 2013, Cedarville inaugurated Dr. Thomas White, the University’s 10th President in its 126-year history. The ceremony included the formal presentation of the presidential medallion, a 24-karat- gold-plated rendering of the University’s official seal. The seal is suspended from a “chain of office” that includes nine engraved and enameled gold-plated banners, each bearing the name and dates of service for Cedarville’s previous presidents. This prestigious medallion has been created exclusively for the President as a symbol of his authority and the University’s heritage that is committed to his care. The ceremonial academic mace, symbolizing the University’s governing power, first appeared in European universities during the 14th century. Cedarville’s new mace was unveiled at Dr. White’s inauguration. It is made of finely turned mahogany with brass accents. The head of the mace bears on each side an official University seal rendered in bronze with blue enamel. The medallion and mace were provided by a generous donor at no cost to the University. In addition to honoring the University’s heritage, the inauguration program honored Dr. White’s family heritage as well. During the ceremony, Dr. White’s father read Proverbs 3:5–6 from a Bible that belonged to Claude White, Dr. White’s grandfather, who was a preacher.
