In November 1980, Jim Phipps ’68, Chair of the Department of Communication, and his running mate, “Ma” Printy, won the Cedar What? mock presidential election. Sponsored by the men of Alpha Chi, the Cedar What? activities, which coincided with the U.S. national elections, were first held in the fall of 1968 and then every four years thereafter. Tapping the ranks of faculty and staff for candidates, a “conservative” ticket was pitted against a “liberal” ticket in a fun-filled campaign that often included “third-party” candidates trying to break in. Phipps was the Cedar What? “Iron Man” because he ran as the “conservative” candidate for president four times — in 1972, 1976, 1980, and 1988 — but won only once in 1980. No other candidate ran multiple years. The Cedar What? banquet and election were held in November, and the new president/vice president were elected for four years until the next national presidential election. The last Cedar What? election was held in 1992. PHIPPS WINS 1980 CEDAR WHAT? ELECTION Cedarville Magazine | 35
