Cedarville Magazine, Spring 2024

be a light in the world, showcasing the transformative power of faith in all aspects of life, including the arena of competitive athletics. Cedarville Athletics, guided by its mission statement, is deeply rooted in a set of core values that reflect its commitment to holistic development, faith integration, and societal impact. The commission to impact the world for Christ stems from the Great Commission found in Matthew 28:19—20: "Go therefore and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, teaching them to observe all that I have commanded you." Cedarville Athletics aligns with the biblical mandate to go beyond personal achievements and actively make an impact on the world, shaping a generation of student-athletes who are ambassadors for Christ. Our student-athletes learn the value of loving others in heated competition. They routinely pray with our competitors, no matter if we win or lose the game. Our coaches teach the importance of sharing the Gospel, even when times are difficult. Participating in collegiate athletics at Cedarville University provides an opportunity for growth as athletes are continually shaped and refined, knowing that God is at work in their lives. A COMMUNITY OF ENCOURAGEMENT The importance of community and camaraderie reflects the biblical emphasis on fellowship found in Hebrews 10:24–25: "And let us consider how we may stir up one another to love and good works, not neglecting to meet together, as is the habit of some, but encouraging one another." Cedarville Athletics fosters a sense of community where athletes uplift and encourage each other, echoing the biblical call to spur one another on toward love and good deeds. A COMMITMENT TO EXCELLENCE Athletics works in concert with student-athletes' academic pursuits by providing opportunities to enhance their educational program. Excellence is taught in every practice and competition for our Yellow Jacket teams. These lessons carry over into life as our student-athletes go on to professional lives in their occupational pursuits. Men’s soccer coach Brett Faro states, “Athletics in higher education, and specifically at Cedarville, is an outstanding value for students who are able to participate. Aside from higher graduation rates, higher GPAs, and higher likelihood of thriving after college than traditional students, Cedarville student-athletes are provided a unique and special experience that I believe allows them the chance to depart from college ready to impact the world for Christ in significant ways.” Volleyball student-athlete Abby Kuyper ’24 said about her experience as a Cedarville athlete, “The value of participating in athletics in my education has encouraged healthy relationships among professors and friends outside of the athletic world. They have been meaningfully supportive, encouraging, and understanding in times where competition interfered with assignments. This responsibility as a student-athlete has also cultivated time management and communication skills that are used in everyday life.” Cedarville's commitment to the holistic development of students is evident in its integration of faith and learning. Athletes are encouraged to see their athletic pursuits as an extension of their academic and spiritual journey. The University's faculty and coaching staff collaborate to create an environment where students can seamlessly integrate their faith into their athletic endeavors. This interconnected approach provides athletes with a comprehensive educational experience that transcends the boundaries of the classroom. Cedarville Athletics aligns with the biblical mandate to go beyond personal achievements and actively make an impact on the world, shaping a generation of student-athletes who are ambassadors for Christ. Chris Cross serves as Vice President for Athletics at Cedarville University. 35
