Cedarville Magazine, Season Year

PATTERSON HALL Patterson Hall was built in 1959 in honor of William B. Patterson, a past Cedarville trustee from 1953 to 1980. Patterson gave sacrificially of his time and efforts by installing, rewiring, and maintaining the electrical systems across Cedarville’s campus, especially in Williams and Patterson Halls. William B. Patterson was one of our longest-living trustees, living to 100 years old before going to be with his Savior in 2000. In 1959, Patterson Hall was built as a two-story building with dorm facilities on the second floor and the college bookstore, snack shop, and lounge on the first floor. Eventually, it was transitioned into a fully functioning residence hall. It housed women and men during different periods over the years depending on the student enrollment. In April 1974, a tornado that came through Greene County dealt significant damage to the dorm, reducing it to a one-story building. In about 1975, Patterson changed functions again and became the College Health Center, serving the campus body and its needs. And in 2003, when the current University Medical Services was constructed, Patterson became the offices for the academic Department of Communication. Cedarville’s Bolthouse Academic Center will be replacing two other campus buildings, which will retire after serving our campus well for decades. Patterson and Williams Halls have seen many uses over the years, from residence halls to classroom and office spaces to a bookstore and snack shop, in Patterson’s case! Read on to learn more about the history of these buildings. MAKING ROOM FOR GROWTH “ Before the 1974 tornado, Patterson Hall — then a twostory dorm — also housed the college snack bar on the south end of its first floor. As a boy, I spent many nickels there, enjoying the candy bars and soft drinks.” General Loren Reno ’70, Senior Adviser to the President 36
