Tennis Player Sees What Cedarville Believes Tennis player Timmy O’Brien ’22 understands the value of clear vision. On the court, a player needs to have accurate perception of his opponent’s baseline, sidelines, and center line so as not to fault or lose a point. A player needs to see the ball into the sweet spot of his racket for maximum strike on a serve. For O’Brien, that clear vision extends off the court. He’s a videographer who captured the tennis team this spring in a series of YouTube videos documenting a winning season (visit cedarville.edu/tennisvlog ) . Once word got out about his video skills, he was enlisted to produce videos for student government candidates. The videos have given him a clear path for connecting with classmates in a deeper way. And he likes what he sees — transparency, sincerity, genuineness. Something on display from the day he first visited Cedarville: “For the Word of God and the Testimony of Jesus Christ” is more than a slogan; it’s a way of life. “Cedarville lives out what they preach,” O’Brien said. “Everyone lives out the Gospel, and I think that was very attractive.” After coming to campus on a CU Friday, he got a chance to mesh with a couple current tennis players. Hanging out with those players as well as taking in Cedarville’s culture prompted O’Brien to feel secure in joining the Yellow Jackets. “They were really supportive and I connected with them quickly,” O’Brien said. “That’s what drew me to Cedarville.” After meeting with head coach Alan Edlund ’75, he could tell the coach’s sincerity and kindness were heartfelt. “The environment as a whole, everyone really shows they care about you,” O’Brien said. “Everyone is willing to talk to you when you need to talk.” As the freshman reflected on his first year at Cedarville, he said the friends he’s made with the tennis team have impacted his life in more than just friendships. The brotherhood he’s enjoyed with his team is something he expects to grow as his years at Cedarville continue. “You have guys who genuinely care about you and reflect a Christian mindset,” he said. Timmy O’Brien’s father, Michael, is the former lead singer for NewSong. He spoke and performed in chapel on October 8, 2018.
