An appreciation by an old chum, Samuel A. Jackson: "The writer was associated with Mr. James L. Chesnut in various ways since 1886. Our first acquaintance was when, as a young man of 18 years, he walked into our 'Boys' Class -in the Sabbath School of Dr. David Steele's Church in Philadelphia. · I remember him as being one of the best informed young men of that large Sabbath School, and a leader among us from the very first. Of pow– erfui physique and the possessor of mental gifts and social qualities of a high order, Brother_Chesnut did not need to seek prom– inence or leadership among his f ellow-stu– dents or friends. In spite of his humility and diffidence, his superior talents and genial ways placed him where he belonged, in the front rank of Christian workers. As a stu– dent in the seminary, Mr. Chesnut's splendid :memory and powers of perception made it easy for him to master the lectures in the– ology, which demanded so much labor on the part of other students. To the seminary he brought much of the sunshine and good cheer of those struggling days, by his ready wit and merry heart. As a theologian, Dr. Ches– nut was Calvinistic, because he believed that Calvinism was. founded on the Bible. As a preacher he had a wonderful command of
