THE GREENE COUNTY GUARDIAN" MANY MERCHANTS FEEL Saturday Business Boom Bursts J meters during the Christmas all-day parkers clogged the should stay hi foi The day of th e Saturday night b u s i ness boom in the small town is gone, many Jam estown merchants have decided. And today a five-man com mittee is looking into means of attracting more p e o p l e into the v i l l a g e , thus in creasing t r a f f i c into local stores. The move arose at Thurs day's meeting of the James town Merchants Association when C h a r l e s Rutter said that he had detected a defi nite shift in buyers' habits. Other retailers agreed that the Saturday evening rush of yore has gone by the way and laid the cause to a number of things: t e l e v i s i o n , the Friday evening pay c h e c k , metropolitan shopping cen ters, and the five-day work week. Rutter urged that the busi nessmen combine, possibly, in a village-wide sale to lure consumbers into Jamestown This or o t h e r remedies are b e i n g investigated by th e c o m m i t t e e appointed by President R. C. Moorman. Members of the committee are Hall J. Hill, O. S. Flesch- man, E a r l G i b b s , C. W. McMurray, and Rutter. In other action, the b us i - nessmen v o t e d to refer all outside solicitations to the Me r c h a n t s Association for group action. This was suggested by Moor - man who said that he, and other businessmen, are con stantly being h a r a s s e d by solicitations from outside of Jamestown. He s u g g e s t e d having the body act on con tributions as a group. Moorman also s u g g e s t e d that the v i l l a g e declare a 10-day vacation on parking meters during the Christmas shopping days. President Hersel Long of the village council said that the council wou l d cooperate if that is what, the businessmen wanted but pointed out that a previous attempt at putting the m e t e r s on the free list was unsatisfactory b e c a u s e all-day parkers clogged the should stay hi force to insure streets. *he parking t u r n o v e r that After discussion, the mem- would let s h o p p e r s find a bers agreed that the meters space easily. ■ Sidewalks , House Numbers Hah Jamestown Mail Home Delivery Two o b s t a c l e s stand be- tweenjamestown and house- to'-house mail carrier deliv ery service - - sidewalks and house numbers. Postmaster Ralph Stitsworth said that the village fulfills all of the qualifications for carrier d e l i v e r y with the p r i nc i pal exception of in complete sidewalks. According to postal regula tions, continuous sidewalks must cover the town so that mail carriers do not have to Request for the carrier ser- slosh through mud and snow : vjce was turned down by the ' . r e g i o n a l postal o f f i c e in ! The other stumbling block, house numbering, is counted as a minor p r o b l e m com pared to the sidewalking. absence of sidewalks. If the sidewalking is laid, approval of the service will be routine. Investigation into the initi ation of carrier service here was spurred by a suggestion by the Jamestown Merchants association.
