Page Two THE GREENE COUNTY GUARDIAN Jamestown, Ohio December 13,1956 VOWS SHE’LL BE TOUGHER NEXT YEAR Martha Haines, 16 th in Nation, Back Home By JIM GATTEN M in Number 16 th i n d i e nation r o l l e d b a c k into Jamestown Monday, stopped for a cup of coffee and was off rolling again i n league competition Tuesday night at Community Bowling lanes in Xenia. Pretty Miss Martha Haines, visibly impressed by rubbing elbows with the nation's fine* est women bowlers, appeared not fully impreued with, the idea that she, herself, now is numbered a mo n g the best distaff keglers in the land. Fifty-six games of champ ionship bowling and uncount ed hand-shakings, she admit ted, left that right upper limp nearly limp. Bu t she went right back 'to the campaign of the 12 - pound sphere and admits she's already knuck ling down to winning a spot in the n a tio n 's finals again next year. Martha started her champ ionship j a u n t as oneof two Xenia area wome n bowlers sponsored by C o m m u n i t y Bowling, In c ., to local elim ination in Dayton. Ann Paul, herlanemate, failed to make the elimination trials. ButMartha was right up there as tops in die D a y t o n area and won a trip to the nation- al finals in C h i c ago under sponsorship of t h e Bowling Alley Proprietors 'Association She q u a l i f i e d 14th In the n a t i o n before match play opened. She finished 16th in the nation. And i t took a steady average of just under 184 to do it. That's far and goneover the heads of m o s t males here abouts- -including die writer. Little Miss Martha, known for her flashy s m i l e and easy going manner, was o n e o f the physically smallest con testants in the national fin als. She, in fact, is one of the smallest g a l s ever to make die national e l i m i n a t i o n bouts this year or any other year. The daughterofjamestowns Dr. R. L. Haines carries an average of 175 in local league c omp e t i t i o n . She soared nearly 10 pins over her aver age on the n a t i o nal effort and vows she'd b e tougher competition if given another chance. After her n i n e days in the Windy City--which resulted inher winning atotal o f$ 1 3 0 ($30 for qualifying number 14th and $100 fo r finishing 1 6 t h ) - - s h e declares the country's top a l l e y addicts are some of die nicest people you'd want to known-most of them, anyhow. She commended the other national f i n a 1 i sts on their sportsmanship and courtesy throughout the tournament, nomatter how rough the go ing got. Martha a c t u a lly returned from Chicago Monday night and was up and ready to go bowling Tuesday night. She got back into the local swing and slide routine immediate- ately. Now, with the glitter of na tional c o m p e t ition folded under die calendar, MissMar- t h a t i s b a c k a t t he several- nights-a-week lane lampoon ing and sharpening up for a- nother year and another shot at the national title.
