Bellbrook, with aright zone d e f e n s e and a small floor, F r i d a y n i g h t wh i t t l e d Greeneview down to a tie with three other teams at the top of the league tussle. Golden Eagle defenders took the best advantage of their we a p o n s - -a smaller floor than that which the James t own c r ew is accustomed, and the dead-eye hitting a- bility of one Fred Fleenor. The 6 3 - 6 0 l os s left the Rams’ record in ruins after seven straight wins and knots the Greene County Basketball League race among Greene- v i ew, Bellbrook, Jefferson and Yellow Springs Bryan. Coach Fred Long's crew ap p e a r e d headed for its 12th win of the season after build ing a 22-18 lead at the end of the first period. But the zone, which collapsed around Greeneview's tall Jerry Hill, kept the Rams within reason Jefferson Knotted in County League Fight Bowersvillc Jefferson show ed itself very much alive and kicking in the Greene Coun ty l e a g u e Friday night by turning back the Indians of Cedarville 63-47 at Cedar- ville. Fred Fleenor of Bellbrook cut loose with six field goals and two foul shots, scoring the same amount of points as the entire Ram team. His running made Drake make two from the field and Pohlman drop ped in one. Hi l l , Franklin, Faulkner, Howard and Patterson made merely one field goal apiece d u r i n g the third frame for Greeneview. Question is, whatta ya gon na say? Greeneview lost. A string of seven s t r a i g h t victories was smashed. The Rams fell from their p e r c h atop the G r e e n e County Basketball League. • There were r e a s o n s , of course. Bellbrook played a tremendous ball game-that's one of the outstanding rea sons. And Greeneview didn't play too hot a ball game-- that's a n o t h e r pretty fair reason. Then there was the zone defense which the Gold en Eagles worked to marve lous advantage. That's cer tainly to their credit. Then there was the small floor. That's no real excuse because the Rams are accus t ome d to small floors on which they've played in other games. One of the good points which may result from the game is that the Rams have been shown they can be whipped by another G r e e n e County team. Greeneview supporters c l a i m it shouldn't happen. And maybe it shouldn't. But the Rams have been shown they have to work for e v e r y t h ing they get. Now it's up to Fred Long and his crew to go out and get it—it m e a n i n g , nat.urally, tire league title and the tourna ment tiara. They may have to split for the title but the Rams can show their stuff in Tie tournament. This, too, is the time for fans to rally a r o u n d their team; to prove that support 'doesn't falter when a game is lost. P r o p e r encourage ment from the s i d e l i n e s , confidence in the Rams’ a- bility to rejuvenate a win ning' streak and a strong de termination on the part of ■i'the players, themselves— Continued on page 5 Bright spot in the icy roads Monday was no school.
