THE GREENE COUNTY GUARDIAN April 11.1957 TOUGH BABY TO NAME Choosing Telephone Exchanges Hard Naming the baby is an eas ier task than selecting new telephone exchange names. Many p r o b l em s had to be s o l v e d by Ohio Bell engi neers before the new names were selected for this area. The following n ame s prefix all telephone numbers Xenia, DRake. Bellbrook, VInewood. Bowersville, GLenview. Cedarville, SOuthfield. Yellow Springs- Clifton, Rockwell. Jamestown, ORchard. Spring Valley, OXbow. The s y s t em of using ex change names is new in these communities and there was considerable research before the company came up with the new exchange names for this area. Howard B. Johnston, Xenia ’ Ohio Bell commercial man ager, pointed out many fac tors that must be considered b e f o r e a choice is made. F i r s t , the name must con- L.O. S u r v i v i n g are his second wife, Lois M. Anderson, and two sons, Lawrence Edwin of Philadelphia and Robert Otis of near Kenton, and another b r o t h e r , Roy Anderson, of Middletown. IVfi DeliaFoodv Dies at Son’s Home Here Mrs. Delia F. Foody died Saturday at die home of her son, William T. Foody, a mile west of Jamq^town, at the age of 75. She was care taker of St. Brigid parish in Xenia for many years. Surviving, in addition to the son, are two daughters, Miss Frances J. Foody, near James town, and Mrs. Harold Man or, near Xenia; another son, John M. Foody, new Jasper; form to the continent-wide numbering plan now being established throu^iout the United States and Canada. Auniform numbering system is one of the mpst important steps in the plan for direct dialing of long distance calls by subscribers. Consideration must be given to the following questions: (1) Is it an easy name to re member? (2) Is it easily understood when spoken? (3) Can it be spelled natur ally? (4) JDoes it c o n f 1 ic t with other exchange names in the dialing area? In former years it was easy to select exchange names, The official exchange chris - teners of Ohio Bell merely D e a t h c a m e Monday at •5:30 a. ^n. to Mrs. Co r a Ethel Devoe at her New Jas per pk. home at the age of 72. Born in New Jasper April 18,1884, shewas the daugh ter of the late Lewi s and Su s a n Brudlove Fudge and married David J. Devoe in 1902. She was a member of the New Jasper Me t h o d i s t Church. The family moved back to the New Jasper area six years ago after spending 35 years in Paintersville. Surviving are her husband and a son, William Devoe, near James town, and three grandchild ren, Pvt. Wi l l i a m Devoe, with U.S. forces in Germany; Russell Devoe, who lived with his g r a ndp a r e n t s the past year, andMiss Connie Devoe, at her p a r e n t s home near Jamestown, and a sister, Mrs. Fred Faulkner, Xenia. two sisters, Miss Anna O'Con ner of Xenia and Mrs. Mar garet Golden of Canton; two brothers, John O 'Connor and Michael O'Conner of Xenia; four grandchildren and two great-grandchildren. B u r i a l was in St. Brigid Cemetery, Xenia. had to delve into local data such as historic events per- taimng iu me cuumi unity, local geography, names of prominent persons connected withthetown's past and pre sent, and s i m i l a r sources. Names applicable to local ne i ghbo r hoods have been quite c omm o n throughout the nation. Then came the advent of dial telephones and in a city with several dial exchanges the first two letters in one e x c h a n g e name could not conflict with the correspond ing letters in another. With direct dialing of long distance calls, telephone en gineers mu s t now consider this same p r i n c i p l e for an entire d i a l i n g zone which may include an entire state or a large part of a state. Under this plan, the United States and Canada have been divided into 108 zones, with each zone identified with a three-digit num b e r . Ohio has been further divided into four zones. The Xenia area is in z o n e 513, which in cludes the southwestern part of the state. The northeastern p a r t of Oh i o is zone 216; northwestern Ohio, zone 419; and southeastern Ohio is zone 614. Now in the 513 zone, which includes Xenia, the exchange names and the first figure in the telephone n umb e r can not c o n f l i c t with another name and number, say one in Dayton or Cincinnati. Let's take a new telephone number in Xenia, for ex-am ple DRake 2-9921. To dial this number the caller dials the first two l e t t e r s of the name, followed by the five figures, a total of seven pulls on the dial. Actually tne iirst twu tet ters, D and R, a re used tc make the telephone number easier to remember. Now by looking at the numbers on the dial associated with these two letters, we find them to be a three (3) and seven (7). In dialing DR 2-9921 you have actually dialed 3 -7 -2 -9 -9 - . - 1 . But again, researchers have found out that it is harder to r e m e m b e r a long number such as 3729921, than it is to r e m e m b e r DR 2-9921, hence the name is combined with the number. Thus the first two letters in the exchange name, coupled with the first f i g u r e of the number, makes a three digit code that identifies the Xenia exchange in the direct long distance dialing plan. While direct dialing of long distance calls from this area, by subscribers themselves, is still a few years away, the telephone n umb e r ing plan now being established, fits in with the uniform nation wide plan. 1 % o ff Sport Shirt Short Sleeve Sizes $-M s F RUTER’SClfFHIIG (Formerly Reeve's Clothing) W.
