THE GREENE COUNTY GUARDIAN May 16, 1957 JUST OUR OPINION Hot Rodders Prone To Ignore Safety Several cities around the Jamestown-Cedarville area are checking autos for mechanical safety features. And we're sure hundreds of area residents are hoping the drive will erase some of the clunkers from the streets. Mechanical failure isn't a big cause of vehicle wrecks Statistics prove that. But elimination of the mechanical defect is a step in the right direction. The big problem is one still unsolved by safety experts-- how to instill responsibility in the driver who shows none. Human failure--not mechanical failure--is the killer on the highways. And human failure is the cause of greatest annoyance. But there are some mechanical problems in which would add greatly to the peace and decorum of any community if r eme d i e d . We’re speaking of such things as gutted pipes, heavy-duty airhoms and such. That deep-throated ru m b le from a set of dual stacks coming off Hollywood mufflers may be music to the ears of a sideburned, teen-age driver, but to the ears of the vast populace, it's just so much more noise. Summer also lends itself to ’screeching tires. This is caused by gow, by quickstops or by two-wheeled cornering. Most any car on the highway now can "lay rubber" if the driverwishes. Horsepower is way up and it's no mark of' aparticularyhotsoup job to "get rubber. " But many of our youth still like the attention they command by making noise. Quickstops, of course, rate high on the list of sheer non sensical action. Adriver shouldn't allow himself to be in a position demanding such a sudden halt. But, again, it ’s the noise. Squealing tires from cornering is a mark of poor driving. The good driver will take a corner much faster, and with much less noise, than the tire squealer. It's a matter of knowing how to handle your vehicle. Although we aren't strictly great fans of auto racing, we strongly can advise some of the younger set to follow the example of professional race-drivers in handling auto mobiles. Proper braking and acceleration practices would allow the area more quiet, would allow the auto owner better g a s o l i n e mileage and would increase highway safety tremendously. ■boot people In Jamestown Mrs. MARIE BOYSEL Phone OR 5-9491 Mr. and Mrs. Fred Allison of Columbus spent the week end with Mr. and Mrs. Harry Mossman and attended the Alumni Banquet at Ross High School Saturday night.
