SEPTEMBER, 1971 The Generation Gap The expression "gener a tio n gap' ' is frequently h eard a nd also seen in print today. It is taken to mean that one age group is not supposed to under stand the motives, thoughts, words a nd deeds of another age group. Now, this may sound elementary, but nevertheless it is true-God has ordained that parents be older than their children! The dictionary defines "gap" as "an opening in anything made by breaking or parting; breach. " A "Generation" is often spoken of a s thirty-three ye ar s and the implication is that those over that age do not understand the younger group espec– ially the teenager s! Friends, this is Communism in ac– tion! To get the people to think that they cannot understand each other ; thus division results, and conquering is the next step. This is really nothing new-King Solomon said in his day, "There is a generation that curseth their father, a nd doth not bless their mother. There is a generation that are pure in their own eyes, a nd yet is not washed from their fi lthiness. There is a generation, O h ow lofty ar e their eyes! and their eyelids are lifted up,, ( Pov. 30: 11 -13) . Cer tainly, circumstances are differ– ent in each generat ion, and we need not expect the younger people to act just as did the older genera tion. We do expect them to think sanely and not destroy wha t h as taken centuries to develop for the betterment of man– kind. I n our Lord's day, there were those who wer e called "a generation of vipers" (M att . 3: 7) ; "an evil and adulterous gener a tio n ,, (Matt. 12 :39 ) ; "th is wicked gener a tion" (Matt. 12:- 45); "a faithless gener a tion " (M att. 17 : 17) ; a nd "a sinful genera tion" (Ma rk 8:38). T hese Scriptures were designa ting a certa in class of people rather than an age group ; but all were headed fo r misery and judgment. H ow delightful fo r young and old– for all classes-to be part of the "Chosen Gener a tion" showing forth the pra ises of H im who bath called us out of darkness into his m arvelous light" ( I P eter 2 :9) . Friend, J esus Christ can help you to under st a nd the other. Young per– son , if you have swallowed the line tha t no one understands you, I urge you . . . I ch allenge you ... to receive J esus C hrist and see if there isn't Someone tha t understands you ! ... REV. J OHN D. YARDLEY THE OHIO INDEPENDENT BAPTIST ..
