No Time for Slumg at Strut ers T be people of Struthers Baptist Taber– nacle didn't have time for the "summer slump." Instead, Pastor Ron Sanderson kept them excited, and, sometimes, guessing, with bis 7 Super Sundays. The summer events began with God and Country Day on July 7 . All who bad served in the military were honored and presented with a plaque. Some com– mented that this was the very first time they bad ever been recognized. The next Sunday was Box Social Day. For this special day, Pastor Sanderson surprised bis congregation with individ– ual boxes containing donuts and cookies to be eaten during a fellowship time between Sunday school and morning worship. The most rewarding aspect of this Sunday was the salvation of three. By far the most popular event was Old Fashioned Day. For this Sunday, members dressed in old fashioned clothing and brought old lanterns to decorate the auditorium. Flower stands borrowed from the local funeral director and an old pump organ found in a barn 60 miles away were part of the decor. A Sunday evening song service featured "old" songs with pump organ accompani– ment. A young person who rented a top hat and cane received the congregation's vote as the most authentically dressed. Friend Day, Professionals Day, Music Day, and Family Day completed the sequence of events. Family Day, planned for the Sunday before school began, featured a carry-in dinner under a large red and white tent in the parking lot. "We will do some of these again," says Pastor Sanderson, "especially the more participatory ones. We bad good attendance and it was just a lot of fun ." The Citation Award, AWANA's bigbestaward, involves completion of 12 years of the AWANA program and the memorization of over 1,100 verses. Only three such awards have ever been given. Who is Madelyn Cox? She is a full-time homemaker, mother of six, grandmother of twelve, and great-grandmother of two. She loves to sew and usually has a big garden which she shares with her church family . She has been a choir member for years, and bas taught beginner Sunday school children for many years. Madelyn became interested in AWANA when her daughter, Marsha, took her to visit a group in 1970. She started with helping the girls learn their verses; she felt they did so well she wanted to learn them, too. Madelyn now works with Sparks, children in kindergar– ten through second grade. It took Madelyn over 15 years to get through al l the books required. She says the highlight of her AWANA years has been seeing herself grow and seeing children begin to take an interest in the things of the Lord. Pastor Bradley Quick has this to say about Mrs. Cox : "Mrs. Cox has been an excellent worker in our AWANA program. The extra work required to earn this award shows tremendous dedication and effort. Our congregation appreciates Mrs. Cox's te timony and servant spirit." - Submiued by Elaine Williams Preferred Risk Insurance Company •Auto •Life • Church • Health •Home •Business Insurance tor non-drinkers your "best buy" Phelps Financial Services, Inc.
