10 Q & A EmilyVanVliet What drew you to Cedarville’s engineering programs? One of the biggest draws is the availability of faculty members and the fact that classes are taught by faculty instead of TAs. And with a small class of students, you get to know all of your professors really well. What’s your take on Cedarville’s faculty? I enjoy visiting their offices and having good conversations with them. I even coauthored a paper with one professor. My advisor and I will go out for coffee or lunch and talk about plans and life in general. How have your extracurricular activities helped prepare you for the future? My activities have had a huge impact on me, especially debate. I learned the importance of being able to articulate ideas quickly, think on my feet, and interact effectively with people from different perspectives. What’s dorm life like? The dorms are great for allowing you to get to know other people and creating a sense of community. There were a lot of people that I found with similar interests. Cedarville classes are taught by highly credentialed Christian faculty — not graduate assistants. The student/faculty ratio is just 13:1. Hometown: Rochester, Minnesota Majors: Electrical engineering and communication arts Highlights: Debate team captain, Society of Women Engineers, Cedarville Scholar
