Bottom Middle:Sliding to safety was the only option for 030. he 14-11 Lady Jackets turned in only the second winning season in the brief history of women's fastpitch softball here at Cedarville. Their season, spanning from mid-February through early May,was dubbed as a "good success." First year coach Bob Fires commented that the excellent crop of young talent blended well with the stability ofthe older players. This year's team was made up largely of freshmen with only four veterans. Seniors Kim Fordyce and Kristi Culp,andjuniors Chris Friesen and Rebecca Clifford were the only returning starters. Coach Fires fielded four freshmen and onejunior to round-off the lineup. The highlight of the year was a first-time ever sweep over Defiance College. "It was the culmination of our team performance," according to senior catcher Kim Fordyce."We reached our peak, against a quality ballclub, both at bat and on the field. Those wins proved to me and the rest of the team that we could play with anybody if we were just patient, persistent, and executed the fundamentals." Senior pitcher Kristi Culp posted an 11-9 record with a 2.36 ERA. Freshman firstbaseman Jill Marhefka scooped a .998 fielding percentage whilejunior Rebecca Clifford ran away with 14 stolen bases. Earning All-WBCC Conference selections were Kim Fordyce and Chris Friesen. Fordyce led the team with a .346 batting average while gunning down 53°/o of attempted stolen bases.
