A Precedent Unlike Any Other "SettingPrecedence"alludes to theimportance of establishing priorities in every area oflife. A precedent is a rule orexamplesetforothers tofollow. In all activities as a Christian, one should desire his/her actions and speech to be above reproach. Livinga pure life in an otherwise dark world, one can be an example and a light which will draw souls to the Lord Jesus Christ - thus truly "Setting Precedence." A Precedent of Faithfulness Dr. Callan sets a precedentfor the Cedarvillefamily tofollow When one thinks of a campus individual whose tenure at Cedarville College is an example of the 1993 Miracle theme,"Setting a Precedence," he or she can think only of Donald Callan. He has been a member of the college faculty since 1960: thirty-three years of service as a faculty professor, chairmanoftheHealthand Physical Education Department,Athletic Director, men's varsity basketball coach, and an active member of several college committees. The honorsandrecordshehasachieved in state and national athletics areastandardforyoungermen and women seeking to make their markin collegiatesports. Of today's active NAIA basketball coaches, Dr. Callan ranks fifth nationally in wins. AlthoughelectedtotheHall of Fame of NAIA, NCCAA, Taylor University, and CedarvilleCollege, his historicalcontribution tothecampus will lie in the birth ofthe Missionary Internship Service. With a heart for missions, Coach Callan led the first MIS trip to the Philippinesin 1970. Since then, his active participation in yearly evangelistic missions trips to various foreigncountrieshasbeenamodel for faculty, staff, and students to emulate. Paulexhorted Titustoteach young menhow toliveoutthe Gospel in their lives: "...in all things showing yourself to be a pattern ofgood works;...that one who is an opponent may be ashamed, having nothing evil to say of you" (Titus 2:6-8). This biblical teaching example has occurred through Donald Callan's setting the precedent among the students of Cedarville College. May the precedent that Dr. Callan has setinspire studentsto "Setting Predcedence" for others to follow. •PatLanders Dixon DR.AND MRS.CALLAN celebrate his 500th win in basketball. Cinderella Visits Windsor Castle Just as the magic in thewandofCinderella's fairy godmother transformed mice into coachmenand herragsintoa beautiful gown, so the Homecomingcommittee magically transformed the dining hall into Windsor Castlefor the Homecoming Royalty Banquet. Castleguardsgreeted visitors and directed them to their seatsfor dinnerandforthe coronation ofa new queen, SheriLeeds. As well-wishers extended their support to the new queen, they made their way out of the castle onto a torchlit path leading to the Chapel. There, they enjoyed a concert with Billy and Sarah Gaines. The Gaines sang from their hearts so that all could see their lovefor God and their lovefor each other. The highlight of the concert was the encore,a requestfrom the audience, "Love is the Reason."As the last note was played and the applausefaded, a Royal Evening at Windsorendedasthough a clock had chimed the hour oftwelve. They organized a variety of activities to involve thefreshman and tofamiliarize them with the new surroundingsand culture. Upon arriving on campus, freshmen were ushered through a maze set up in the gym. The maze involved a multitude of stops; at these locations, students received their post office box numbers, their registration packet, information about Patterson Clinic, etc. The C.A.O. also arranged to have students drive to the airport to pick up new students, help Chuck in the cafeteria, and run other necessary errandsto make orientation week run smoothly. Perhaps the most helpful element of Getting Starting, however, was that each Small Group Leaderor Helperworea button thatsaid,"1.0.H.," which stands for "I'm Over Here." The idea behind the button was that these leaders were people the freshmen could approach with any questions or requests for help. The C.A.O., group leaders, helpers, and resident assistants all went out of their way to make Getting Started a success. Thanks to their efforts, many freshmen and transfers experienced a successful transition into Cedarville life. 'Lynda Gavitt Photos by Marsha Ols

Cancer-Free in '93! God often allows difficult circumstances#to come into a Christian's life in order to help the person grow and to bring glory to Himself. Laura Maki is convinced thatthis wasthecase in her recent bout with cancer. This past September, she underwenttwo surgeries in which thecanceroustumor in her neck was successfully removed. Although her situation was discouraging at times, Laura was thankful for the grace and special peace God gave her. She praised the Lord as she watched Him work through her illness to strengthen her faith and to encourage those around her. God was glorified through Laura's suffering as others witnessed her optimism and trust in Him. She hopes those who hear her story will be encouraged, realizing that God can use the difficult times in others' lives to make them stronger people and to glorify His name. James 1:2-4 has had a new significance#for Laura: Consider it pure joy, my brothers, wheneveryouface trials of manykinds, because youknow that the testing ofyourfaith develops perseverance. Perseverance mustfinish its work so that you may be mature and complete, notlacking anything. •Kathleen Coy Candace O'Toole Jason Oesterling James Olinger Lori Olson Monty Orcutt Matthew Orme Dean Osuch Amy Owens Stephen Paine Elizabeth Parsons Stephen Patterson Robert Peart Ryan Pelton Kristoffer Pepperell Marla Perkins Michelle Perry Kyle Peterson David Pfahler Aimee Phelps Lori Phipps Jonathan Pickens Janine Pinkley Nathan Piovesan Kimberly Pletcher Stephanie Plikerd Julie Plunkett Tamara Pool Erica Porter Janet Potts Amy Powley Jill Pratt Chad Prosser Denise Proudfoot Cynthia Quint Sara Radford Matthew Rainear Todd Ramer Melanie Ras Student Life •

Hunger Pains November 16-20 was a typical week at Chuck's except for one thing: students did not waste as much food as usual. Sure, some still complained about the food, pitched their meals, and decided on a dinner of cereal ... again. But many students had a new appreciation for the food and for others around the world who would be thrilled to receive such a meal. Cedarville's first annual Hunger Awareness Week was a success. Various speakers and activities throughout the week informed students about the sad situations of the homeless and the hungry. Several campus organizations gave the college family a chance to get involved by collecting money through projects such as"Snack Attack" and the campus-wide Young's Run, in which students donated the money they would have spent on food to help the needy in the Xenia/Dayton area. This special week gave students a greater awareness of the problems of the hungry,as well as a greater desire to sacrifice their time and money to help those in need. 'Kathleen Coy oek

If you are sane, you hit the snooze and put off the day ahead for yet afew more minutes. If you happen to be a sophomore, however, you rise, shower, and leave to have breakfast with Dr. Dixon. Yes, it's the much-talked-about Sophomore Celebration! Every quarter, sophomores gather in the President's Dining Room for breakfast. Butthe breakfast is more than just eating and running; students enjoy a time of fellowship, meeting with one another and with Dr. Dixon. "Why would anyone wantto get up at6:30for breakfast?" you may ask yourself. Well, the top three reasons for going are as follows: 1. Get my free mug since I'll never make a 4.0! 2. I'll never be a sophomore again: why not?! 3. I get up at that time anyway Chadwick Persons Penny Persons •Chad Cornwell Amy Peterson Sandra Peura Marianne Phillips Beth Pickell Student Life
