Serbian Soldiers in Bosnia Civil warspread across Yugoslavi,a nation of six republics and two provinces that had been plagued for centuries by historic, ethnic, religious and economic differences. Nationalist,anticommunistpartieswonelections in 1991 in all republics except Serbia, the largest, and Montenegro, the smallest. Then Croatia and its neighbor Slovenia declared theirindependence.Traditionalrivalries were strongest between the 9 million Serbs, who belong to the Orthodox church, and the 5 million Croats, who are Roman Catholic. Tens of thousands of people became refugees and the killing continued. Food for Somalia The U.S. Marines arrived in Somalia onDecember9,1992. ThestarvingAfrican country was ravaged by famine and widespread looting of food from international relief agencies. The Marines offered a security force to insure safe food distribution.
