TheSound-o Music Following the calling ofher youthful heart,Fraulein Maria is disheartened when the Mother Abbess informs her that perhaps she is not ready for the secluded life of the abbey just yet. Knowing Maria's love for children and adventure, the Mother Abbesssends Maria away to becomethe nextnannyfor theseven children of the widower Captain Georg Von Trapp. Upon arriving at the regal mansion,Maria is overwhelmed notonly with the luxuriant atmosphere, but even more so with the militant and stifled airwhichpervadesthefamily's life. However, Maria's vibrant and fun-lovingspiritisnoteasily doused; as the Captain leaves on one of his frequent trips to Vienna t isit his lady friend,the Baroness Schraeder, Maria begins to teach the children how toonceagain enjoythefrolicsof youth and the sounds of music. MuchtotheCaptain'ssurpriseand chagrin, he arrives home with Baroness Schraeder to find his once marching childrenrunning,hopping and skipping tothesound ofa differenttune. In heated reaction,hecommands the Fraulein to pack her bags and return to the abbey. Butsoon he changeshis mind ashehearsthe children singingin beautifulharmonyto his delighted guests. But life at the VonTrapphouseisnotthesame,and neither is Maria. Looking toface her problems Maria returns to the mansion only to find that the Captain is going to be married to the Baroness Schraeder. But the Captain's heart belonged to someone else and so the Captain and Maria,with the consent ofthe children,were soon thereafter married. Butthe harmonyis disrupted once again as the Captain is called into service into the Nazi navy.
