There are a variety of methods, but here is one method in Adobe Illustrator for adding grain to a gradient background: 1. Make a copy of the background you want to add grain to. 2. Select the copy and open the "Effects>Texture>Grain ..." menu. 3. Adjust the intensity and contrast options until a good balance is established between color retention and grain visibility.
