1984 NCCAA National Soccer Tournament

Of all the teams coming only one knew 6 months ago where it would be November 22nd — LeTourneau’s Yel lowjackets. Even so Coach Steve Beacham feels confi dent about his team being in the tournament. "Maybe we didn’t go through Dis trict playoffs but we have as much talent as anyone}’ defended Beacham. Defended? He brings in a squad boasting the highest winning percentage (.722, 6-2-1) in LeTourneau his tory (behind only top seed Tennessee Temple). Defended? A team allow ing but 7 goals all year while notching 6 shutouts. Defended? A team which has outpointed foes 108-17 including 40 goals scored. "This is a team which on any given day can beat a lot of clubs" he added. One game that stands out to Beacham was a 3-1 loss to JBU at home. "We began very sluggishly and let in 2 quick goals" described the 6th year Coach "before we got ourselves together and played very well the rest of the way." Sophomore Dave Busenitz, a striker, and Tad Huck, a freshman center halfback, combined for 15 Yellowjac- ket goals and 7 assists. Busenitz, a native of W. Germany, and Huck, raised in Austin, Tx, will have help from Longview product Scott Fewell (5 goals and 1 assist) and fellow wing- man Steve Shelpuk (3 goals and 3 assists). Senior sweeperback Dave Drozd anchors an experien ced defense. "David’s been hurt a lot this year, in cluding the crucial match with JBU, yet he has never missed a start" acclaimed Beacham. Flanked by senior Mark Engstrom on the left and junior Dan Lam on his right with another senior, Dave Mann, at stopper the gutsy back is confident of LeTourneau’s chances. Benefitting from all of this defense is acrobatic goalkeeper Don Lawrence, a sophomore. His 0.78 goals/ game age ranking him #2 a- mongst NCCAA goalkeepers. Midfielders Mike Powers, a senior, and frosh Zaiyi- en Hwang, having recovered from his pulled hamstring, will support Huck in con trolling midfield. They are backed by senior Mike Doherty and Brent Fewell. # NAME POS HT WT CLASS MAJOR HOMETOWN 0 Lawrence, Don G 5 ’11" 155 So Aviation Technology Exton, Pa 1 Plitt, Jeff G 5'11" 170 Fr Aviation Technology West Chester, Pa 2 Black, Dan FB 6 ’ 3" 210 So Aviation Technology Brownsburg, In 3 Kinch, Roy HB 5'10" 140 Sr Electrical Technology San Jose, Costa Rica 4 Lam, Dan FB 5' 7" 137 Jr Mechanical Engineering Taichung, Taiwan 5 Berger, Andreas FB 6 ’ 1" 155 Jr Computer.
