1984 NCCAA National Soccer Tournament

With but 4 wins in the last 2 years Roberts Wes leyan Head Coach Mike Faro could not have even drea med of coming to the Nati onal Tournament. "We are real excited to be playing in the Nationals especial ly after we started out at only 3-7" informed the 2nd year coach. Wesleyan came on strong to lose only 2 games the rest of the year and post a 9-9 slate. Faro went on "To have only two seniors and accomplish this is ve ry significant considering last season." A big difference for the Raiders is the addition of freshman Chet Gapczynski. In this first campaign he led Roberts in scoring and assists, 7 and 5 respec- tivly. "Chet has done it all for us — he started as a halfback but when our defense was having trouble he willingly moved back to sweeper and keyed our late season comeback^ praised Coach Faro. Besides Gapczynski, Faro expects strikers Wynston Hayes, sophomore, and Pe ter Mastrogiovanni, a jun ior, to put the Raiders on the board. Both can score, 5 goals each, while Hayes has 3 assists too. They will receive ample support from junior midfi elder Don DeVries, 5 goals and 1 assist, and striker Brett Austin, 1 goal and 3 assists. In fact, it was Austin who scored the goal giving Roberts a 1-0 triumph over Nyack College in the East Regional. With 10 minutes remaining Austin split the Nyack defense and slipped the ball home past the on- rushing keeper sending the Raiders on to the Natio nals. Yet the game was costly for the Raiders. Fullback and team captain Jim Mor ton broke his foot in the game and will not play in the tournament. Coach Faro will choose between junior Paul Huber and soph Barry Northrup to replace him. Faro sighed "This really hurts us but with what the guys have already accomp lished I think they can o- vercome it." This places even greater pressure on Gapczynski but he will receive help from from stopper Scott Reber and 3 year keeper Manfred Schneider (5 shutouts). "I am confident we will make a good showing" Faro closed. ♦ # * # # :{c>}c# # jjt # 5}cjjc >|c:{< # # Jfi sjs # s}c :{e# :{e >'fi j { o } c >jc # sje>{cijc ;{c j } c # # # £ # # s}!# # 3}csjc5{c sfc# > } : % ' ■ >}c>ie^c# >{e 5}csjc>}:jjcjjc % :{ejjt 5{cjfc$ 5jc# 3jc:$ $ $ $ 3jc # NAME POS HT WT CLASS MAJOR HOMETOWN 0 Schneider, Manfred G 6' 0" 185 Jr Business Administration North Chili, NY 1 Duprey, Jack S 5 ’ 7" 145 Fr Computer Science Greenfield, Ma 2 Hayes, Wynston S 5' 8" 150 So Religion/Philosophy Liberia, Africa 3 Mastrogiovanni, Peter S 5 ’ 9" 155 Jr Elementary Education Rochester, NY 4 Hayden, Craig FB 5' 9" 160 Jr Business Administration Marion, NY 5 Reber, Scott FB 5' 8" 160 Jr Computer Science N.Chili, NY 6 Johnson, Steve G 5'10" 165 Sr Psychology Mayville, NY 7 Gapczynski, Chet HB 5'10" 165 Fr Business Administration Lima,NY 8 Ziegler, Ron HB 5 f10" 155 Jr Elementary Education North Tonawanda 9 Prouty, John FB 6' 0" 175 Jr Chemistry North Chili, NY 10 Swan, Jeff S 6 ’ 2" 180 Jr Computer Science Chili, NY 12 Austin, Brett S 5' 7" 160 Jr Business Administration North Chili, NY 13 Northrup, Barry FB 5'10" 175 So Business Administration Byron, NY 14 McGrath, Mike HB 6' 0" 160 Sr Business Administration Oswego, NY 15 Huber, Paul FB 6' 0" 190 Jr Social Work Fleming, NJ 16 Anderson, Alvin S 5'11" 170 Jr English North Chili, NY 17 DeVries, Don HB 5'11" 160 Jr Business Administration Macedon, NY 18 Morton, Jim FB 6' 2" 170 Jr Computer Science Churchville, NY Head Coach: Mike Faro **%********4^***4^4^j|^4^***********4^***************** ****** ****** ********** ****************** 21
