With the start of each basketball season, the mindset of NAIA student-athletes, coaches and supporters is locked on reaching the playoffs and competing for anational title. This event is the culmination of those dreams, determination, hours of team and individual preparation, and dealing with the highs and lows experienced throughout aseason. While the reward for that perseverance may come from competing in this event, from win- ning anational title or in the form of team or personal achievement, the less apparent and more important result is the strengthening of character. Since its inception, the NAIA has been focused on the education and development of student athletes and through our new Champions of Character program, we are emphasizing the positive lessons of sports. Respect, integrity, respon- sibility, servant leadership and sportsmanship are the tenants of initiative. The mission is to create an environment in which every NAIA student-athlete, coach, official and spectator is committed to the true spirit of competition. In the end, sport will be better served. Society will be better served. And student-athletes will acquire character traits that will benefit them and everyone with whom they interact. On behalf of our entire Association, I want to thank Sioux City for hosting this event and furthering the mission of the NAIA. In particular, I would like to express my appreciation to Sioux City Mayor Dave Ferris, tournament directors Dennis Gann and Tim Seaman and countless vol- unteers for their dedication, time and energy. Our member institutions thank you for your efforts. To the student-athletes and coaches, I would like to encourage you to strive to be the very best while taking amoment to realize the les- sons that can be learned from this experience. And to the fans, I would like to express my appreciation for your support and extend my wished for an enjoyable event.
