COLLEGE TO LAW ENFORCEMENT PATHWAY PROGRAM BEGINS The College to Law Enforcement Pathway Program accepted its first 11 candidate enrollees in early 2022. The program is being piloted by Cedarville and Central State University and exists to create a pool of pre-qualified, college-educated, mentored candidates for law enforcement agencies in Ohio. The program was first introduced last year by Ohio Governor Mike DeWine, and it is a byproduct of the Governor ’ s impl ementat ion of the Office of Law Enforcement Recruitment. DeWine asked Patrick Oliver, the Ph.D.-credentialed director of Cedarville University’s criminal justice program, to serve as the lead consultant to the statewide office and the new academic program. The program welcomes qualifying upperclassmen criminal justice majors with a minimum 3.0 GPA, history of compliance with the program’s six core values — integrity, service orientation, human relations skills, team compatibility, performance- dr i ven, and se l f - cont rol — and professor recommendations to fill out a pre-application. Candidates who make it past the pre-application phase begin a thorough vetting process, which is required before they are fully accepted into the program. Officer mentorship is part of the program, and participants are guaranteed a job with a partnering law enforcement agency upon graduation. Working with Governor DeWine and Ohio’s Office of Law Enforcement Recruitment (OLER) is central to the success of this program. "College students are developed, mentored, and guaranteed a job," said Oliver. "Police agencies get top quality hires, and the participating universities have a distinctive honors program that places criminal justice majors in jobs after college."
