Invitation to Cybersecurity

Acknowledgements “I, from the influence of thy looks, receive access in every virtue; in thy sight more wise, more watchful, stronger…” Adam to Eve in Paradise Lost by John Milton First, I want to thank the Ohio Cyber Range Institute (OCRI) for believing in me and investing in this project. Their support of me and many other faculty members throughout the state has helped to advance cybersecurity in Ohio and has had an even farther reaching exponential impact through the students we teach. A special thank you to the visionary behind the OCRI, Dr. Richard Harknett. His name will go down in the history books for his contributions to cyber persistence theory and the study of nation state cyber competition. In the cyberspace age, cybersecurity is national security, and Dr. Harknett’s influence has without question strengthened the cybersecurity of our nation—it is difficult to overstate the impact of such a contribution to the greatest and most influential country in the world. He is a treasure to the state of Ohio, and because of his extraordinary humility, is also a friend and mentor to me. Thank you to Tricia Clark and the Cedarville University Library for publishing this textbook. Thank you to the administration at Cedarville, Dr. White, Dr. Mach, and Dean Chasnov, for enabling me to pursue cyber education beyond our campus making projects like this possible. Thank you to my computer science and cyber operations faculty colleagues. Our common vision for the Word of God and the testimony of Jesus Christ is our secret weapon that helps us punch far above our weight class. Our exceptional collegiality has enabled us to do so much more together than we ever could have done alone. A special thank you to my mentor, Dr. Dave Gallagher, who was the first to recognize the opportunity for cybersecurity education at Cedarville. Through his wise counsel I enrolled at the Air Force Institute of Technology for my PhD to study cybersecurity, launching me on a blessing-filled adventure that now includes the writing of this textbook. Thank you to all my Center for the Advancement of Cybersecurity Student Fellows who work side-by-side with me in advancing cybersecurity for the benefit of our nation. They have helped to shape cybersecurity in the academy. A special thank you to my three-time Chief Student Fellow, David Reid, my right-hand man who has left a legacy at Cedarville that will pay dividends for decades, and to Kaicheng Ye, our resident elite hacker who helped build the lab exercises and VMs that accompany this textbook.
