The Adversary of Cybersecurity: Hackers 61 the terms phreak (for phone phreaking) and hack. 2600’s name is derived from 2600 Hz, the frequency that when “whistled” into the old landline telephone system would trigger operator mode—the gateway to phone phreaking (see Figure 3.7). It became known as “The Hacker Manifesto” and is famous in hacker culture for its portrayal of the hacker psychological profile. “Smashing the Stack for Fun and Profit” by Aleph One appeared in Phrack in 1996. It is an academic-quality paper that describes buffer overflow attacks, and is a great example of hacker tradecraft being shared with other hackers.
