Maestros of Ministry: Their Legacy in the Department of Music and Worship
DAVID MATSON | 7 Exemplifying his unwavering stance, Dr. Matson always prayed with students before class. Although sometimes asking students to lead in prayer, Matson never forced the issue and even had a discrete index card system for the students to let him know if they were willing to lead in prayer. Since his retirement in 2009, Dr. Matson continues to serve the Department faithfully as Professor Emeritus with informal wise counsel to the current Music History area and as a Consulting Editor for the Depart- ment’s undergraduate journal of musicology, Musical Offerings. With his twenty years of leadership as Chair, and another twenty-three years as a faculty member, Matson should be considered as one of the most important movers and shakers in developing the Music Department into what it is today.
