As discussed in the review of the literature, there are two paradigms of third-party mediation in conflicts. In reality, there is often overlap between these two views. However, the Northern Ireland peace process overall took a more structuralist approach. An American, Senator George Mitchell, took a very active role in the process, developing much of the structure and framework of the negotiations.
