1 Chapter 1. Introduction Purpose Statement The purpose of this document is to record the history of the commissioning and development of Steven Bryant’s Concerto for Alto Saxophone , provide an analysis of the compositional elements of the work, and to provide a performance guide for both the conductor and performer. Steven Bryant has gained stature as one of the most recognized and performed composers for the modern wind ensemble. His Concerto for Wind Ensemble and Ecstatic Waters have become prominent works of wind literature in this century and both works, as well as several others from his catalog, have been the subject of recent research. His music is regularly performed by middle school, high school and college bands across the country. He studied with John Corigliano at The Julliard School, Cindy McTee at the University of North Texas, and Francis McBeth at Ouachita University. He catalog contains vocal music, chamber works, and music for orchestra and bands.
