A lumnotes CLASS NEWS 60s Dr. David Warren '64 has accepted the position as the state representative for the Ohio Association of Regular Baptist Churches. A celebration and installation service was held on April 28, 1998 at the First Baptist Church of Medina. Warren earned his Th.M. at Dallas Theological Seminary, pastored several churches, taught at Faith Baptist Bible College, and in 1980 returned to teach at Cedarville College. In 1997 Warren received an honorary doctor of divinity from Grand Rapids Baptist Seminary for work done in the classroom, in churches, and in writing. Dr. Warren and his wife, Pat (Schonscheck '63), have four children who are all actively serving the Lord. Pat completed her M.A. in English from Wright State University in 1992. Dianne Chaffe Gottwals'69 received a 10-year service award from Cedarville College. Dianne works in the Media Resource Center as a graphics assistant. 70s Preston Butcher '70 was selected for the Senior Executive Program with the Internal Revenue Service. Preston, his wife, Ruth, and son, Cameron, live in Florida. Their daughter, Amy, graduated from Cedarville College in 1997. Phyllis Codr Beck '73N and son, Tim Beck '98 encouraged their entire computer class to visit the Cedarville College website at the New Horizons Learning Center in Boise, Idaho this summer. The teacher was so impressed with the pictures of campus on the computer that everyone surfed the net to "cedarville.edu" and used the Dixon Ministry Center as their desktop wallpaper! Phyllis teaches junior high at Nampa Christian School; husband, Dave '71, is an insurance account executive; son, Matt'98 married Marie Lyons '98; Benjamin begins his freshman year at Cedarville College this fall; and Tim is a sophomore in high school. Luann Robb Nicholas'74 received a Centennial Library Distinguished Service Award. Luann works as a circulation services manager. Dawna Robb Henslin '76 was named the 1998 Teacher of the Year. Dawna teaches first grade in the Dodge Center Public Schools in Minnesota. Her husband, Tom '76, is a farmer. Mark Seeley '77 accepted the position of vice president for development at Reformed Theological Seminary/Charlotte in 1997. Mark earned his Master of Divinity degree at RTS and has been employed in several capacities that helped develop the needed skills for this position. Mark met his wife, Nancy(Dear '77),in a freshman speech class at Cedarville College. The Seeleys have four children. Bryan Waggoner'77 served as team leader for the Youth Alive ministry of Bethesda Baptist Church in Brownsburg, Indiana. The group of 23 high school students assisted missionaries in England and Scotland from June 4-13. Bryan is a youth pastor at Bethesda Baptist Church and is married to Sharon Levin '80 . John Alvey'78 is working for Itinerate Preaching Ministry, filling pulpits when and where needed. He is stationed at Ft. Hood in Killeen, Texas. Debra Cullen '78 recently published a unique training system for spiritual childbirth entitled New Birth: The Story and The Certificate. The booklet includes a two-sided card or "the birth certificate." One side of the card is used as a visual aid to present the Gospel, and after a decision is made for salvation, the other side of the card is used to document the new birth. Linda Divan '79N serves Cedarville College in the Centennial Library as a collection services manager and was recently recognized for 20 years of service. Dee Jackson Haynes'79 and Deb Jackson Searles '81 performed in Ohio churches during July 1998. The Jackson sisters continue to sing and record together, performing most concerts in the summer and spending family vacation time together. On July 22, 1998, Camden Baptist Church in Oberlin, Ohio, where Cal Searles'77 is senior pastor, was struck by lightning and burned to the ground. Continue to pray for the congregation and for Cal and Debbie as they overcome this tragedy. Allen '79 and Janice Zachary Webber'79 met Dwight'79 and Cindy Jindra Strickland '79 in Washington, D.C. at Ford's Theatre in July 1998 while on vacation. Janice was wearing her Cedarville College Alumni T-shirt, and the tour guide asked her where Cedarville was. Cindy, sitting in the next row back, overheard and said, "I'm a Cedarville graduate, too!" An informal, small alumni reunion followed! 4101 Ir Z 0 ,Airn c•%:;--7.-,Y4.41, 4'"' 80s Michael Stephens'80 was named a recipient of the "40 Under 40 Award" which is sponsored by The Business News and C.H. Dean and Associates in Dayton, Ohio. Mike is president of Greene Memorial Hospital in Xenia, Ohio and executive director of Med-Health Systems located in Greene County, Ohio. Bonnie Vesilko Price '81 completed a master's degree in humanities/interdisciplinary studies at Houston Baptist University in 1998. She teaches composition at a local junior college and co-owns/administrates Lake Houston Academy, a private academic school grades 6-12. John Balaicuis '82 and his wife, Ann, recently moved from Elizabethton, Tennessee to Philadelphia, Pennsylvania where John will begin medical school at Jefferson Medical College. Ann works for Management Recruiters of Philadelphia. John has undergraduate and master's degrees in psychology. Dave'83 and Lenna Barrand Black '82 serve at Riverview Church near Cleveland, Ohio. Dave is the associate pastor in charge of the youth ministry and Lenna serves as secretary. They just completed a missions trip to Brazil with 10 teens from the church. The team visited Cedarville College graduates Dave '81 and Carol Sue Cox Merkh '82 and Dave'82 and Cynthia Ulmer Cox '83N while in Brazil. The Blacks have three daughters: Jessica (14), Jordan (12), and Jenna (9). All look forward to attending Cedarville College in the future. Connie Carr'83 has joined the corporate law division of the law firm of Seeley, Savidge & Ebert, L.P.A. where she will focus on general corporate law, securities, regulatory issues, and condominium development and management law. Connie received her law degree in 1990 from The American University in Washington, D.C. Karen White Parman '84 (left), a kitchen consultant with The Pampered Chef, co- presented a workshop on the topic of theme shows at the national conference held in Chicago on July 20-22. She was also awarded the company's most prestigious award of "Top Performance Cluster" in the category of first line cluster sales with yearly cluster sales of over S375,000. Karen has been with The Pampered Chef since May 1994 and holds the title of advanced sales director. For Karen, the job is a blessing! Representing a company that is run by a Christian who values the importance of family meal times, working as much or as little as she wants, and using the job as an avenue for ministry is everything Karen hoped for. "You can have your cake and eat it too.. of course, it tastes much better when it's baked on a Pampered Chef Baking Stone!" Karen says. Karen is pictured with the President of Pampered Chef, Doris Christopher, on a President's tour. Sherri Wilson Patterson '84 and her husband, Kent, have relocated to Randolph AFB in San Antonio, Texas. Sherri will continue working for the Department of Defense as a budget analyst. Her husband was promoted to major. Michael'85 and Carolyn Curtis Orban '85N attend First Baptist Church of Medina, Ohio where Michael is teaching drama, family living, and woodworking at First Baptist Christian School. The Orbans have two children: Catherine (7)and Michael (6). Scott'86 and Jane Romig Brooker '86 live in Cincinnati, Ohio where Jane leaches business courses at Lakota West High School, and Scott is a claims adjustor with Progressive Insurance. Jane continues to run the 1500 meters, and Scott coaches. The Brookers have 2 sons: Judson (11) and Matthew (7). Anthony '86 and Sarah Heidorn Goocey '89N, recently moved to Marietta, Ohio where Tony is a clinical nurse manager in ICU/PICU for Marietta Memorial Hospital. Sarah works for the Turn 10 Company. April Augustus Kammeyer '86 is working as a counselor for Family Services of Burlington County in New Jersey. The Kammeyers recently relocated to Shamong, New Jersey. David Kammeyer'85 works for Opex Corporation as controller. David Beverly'87 was ordained to the Gospel ministry on March 20, 1998. David received his master of theological studies from Grand Rapids Baptist Seminary in 1995. He graduated from the School of Church Ministries internship program at Calvary Baptist Church in Grand Rapids, Michigan in January 1998. David and his wife, Lora, have three children and are currently seeking a missions ministry with ABWE. Jonathan Papa'89 recently departed to participate in a multinational exercise in the Mediterranean and Baltic Seas aboard the hospital ship USNS Comfort. Popa is one of 700 active duty and reserve naval personnel who will participate in Baltic Challenge '98 along with military personnel from eleven European nations. Rriitthli,I. \ 90s Glen Bowman'90 earned a Ph.D. in European history in 1997 from the University of Minnesota and was recently appointed assistant professor of history at Chowan College near Norfolk, Virginia. Glen married Maria Westrup in 1996. Brian Popenfoose'90 has been promoted to account manager for Latin America sales with Chore-Time Brock's international grain and feed storage systems division. Brian and his wife, Sharren, will continue to reside in Goshen, Indiana with their daughter, Julia. Jody Hutchinson Ross, M.D.'90 recently finished her pediatric residency at the Milton S. Hershey Medical Center of the Penn State Geisinger Health System and has accepted a part-time position on the clinical pediatric faculty at the center. Jody is married to Stephen Ross '89. Men's Soccer Update Roger Swigart'90 will serve as head coach for the Yellow Jacket men's soccer team as John McGillivray '70 steps into a new role as chair of the Department of Exercise and Sport Science. Coach McGillivray will also devote time to coaching and developing the women's soccer program in its second year of existence. McGillivray posted a 215-197-27 record in 24 years as head coach of the men's team. Swigart has extensive soccer experience as both a player and coach. He was at Pillsbury College in Minnesota for the 1993 through 1995 campaigns and was the Comets' head soccer coach. He has played professionally for the Charlotte Eagles. Swigart has been heavily involved in missions to England and Bangladesh with soccer teams. ofi Paolo Gonzalez '91 began seminary at the International School of Theology/Asia. While in the Philippines, Paolo is serving Greenhills Christian Fellowship. He also began a medical mission foundation called LifeWorks. The foundation's purpose is to serve tribal communities in the Philippines with medicine and the Gospel. Sheri Larkin '91 is stationed at Ft. Campbell, Kentucky and is assigned to the 101st Airborne Division Air Assault Band. Sheri will complete her armed services commitment in two years. David '93 and Anna Maxon Crandall'93 have moved to Olathe, Kansas. David earned a juris doctor degree, cum laude,from New York Law School in June 1998. Steve Hoewing'93 started with the MIS department at Zexel USA of Decatur, Illinois, in May 1998 as a system analyst. This change follows five years with Morgan Distribution, a major wholesaler of Andersen Windows and millwork materials. Steve and his wife, Monica, have two children. Matthew Martens'93 has completed his service as a law clerk to Chief Justice William H. Rehnquist at the U.S. Supreme Court. He has joined the litigation department in the Washington, D.C. office of the Los Angeles-based firm, Latham & Watkins, where he will specialize in appellate litigation and white-collar criminal defense. Paul'93 and Lisa Davidson McGrady'89 reside in Park Forest, Illinois and attend Hickory Creek Community Church. Paul works for TRU*SERV, the parent for True Value Hardware, as a corporate lawyer and is working toward a second master's degree in political science from Governor's Community College. Lisa looks forward to completing doctoral studies in English at Purdue University. Susan Beach Varotti'93 currently works for Sithe Energies in Manhattan. The company builds power plants around the world. Marcus Varotti'96 works for Donaldson, Luufkin, and Jenrette. The Varottis returned to the U.S. from Brazil in March 1998. Darryl Hammock '94 earned his master of divinity degree from The Southern Baptist Theological Seminary in Louisville, Kentucky on May 22, 1998. Darryl is married to Wendy Weyand '95. Kevin Shoop'94 earned a master of arts in English from Bowling Green State University in Ohio this spring. He began work at Boise Marketing Services in Toledo and is developing their intranet pages. Alicia Bennett'95 addressed Indiana Governor Frank O'Bannon's roundtable on community service in Indianapolis, after completing two terms as an AmeriCorps volunteer last October. Alicia will begin her second year at Purdue University as a graduate student and teaching assistant in the creative writing fiction program where she is pursuing an MFA. Alicia lives in Lafayette, Indiana. John Cooley '95 graduated magna cum laude at Washington and Lee University School of Law on May 17, 1998. He joins the law office of Wooten and Hart in Roanoke, Virginia. Lindsay Hamel'95N earned a bachelor of arts in sociology and was recently hired as a counselor in a residential women and children's program at Mel Trotter Ministries in Grand Rapids, Michigan. Lindsay attends Rockford Springs Community Church. Troy Hamilton '95, Devon Berry '95, Mark Irving '94, and Jeff Miller '94 (not pictured) joined forces over the summer. These four men made a commitment to reunite in order to pool efforts for a time of ministry, mutual sharpening, and labor. God led them to Grace Baptist Church in Bellingham, Washington—Mark's home church. The men have kept busy preaching for the services, teaching Bible studies, painting the exterior of the church building, and starting several evangelistic outreaches in the community.
