Inspire, Fall 1998
L ike many little boys,John Whitmore collected rocks as a kid. And after an eighth grade field trip hunting for fossils, he knew he wanted to become a geologist. John holds a bachelor of science degree in geology from Kent State University and a master of science degree in geology from the Institute for Creation Research. This fall, he will begin doctoral studies in paleontology at Loma Linda University in California. Since coming to Cedarville as assistant professor of geology in 1991,John has been instrumental in the development of an earth science minor, which requires classes such as "Historical Geology" and "Oceanography." In 1998,Cedarville graduated its first student with the earth science minor. In the future, the Department would like to offer majors in both earth science and geology. For the Whitmores, geology is a family affair. John's wife, Jamie, and their three-year- old daughter, Victoria, occasionally accompany him on class field trips. Victoria can name more dinosaurs than most adults, and their two cats are even named after rock types—Igneous and Galina! The Whitmores recently welcomed another daughter,Jocelyn (3 months), who has her own collection of stuffed dinosaurs! They attend Southgate - Baptist Church in Springfield, Ohio. John often speaks in churches and schools on the topics of biblical creationism and geology. Local Learning While textbook knowledge is important. John maintains that the best learning comes from in, the-field experience. Several area in southwestern Ohio provide oppoitunnies for geological study.
