Inspire, Fall 1999
From The Director's Chair I grew up watching The Bob Newhart Show. That was my introduction to psychology. It was fun and funny, and I thought maybe I'd like to be a psychologist someday. As a college student,I took general psychology with Dr. Ballard,Dr.Abbas, and Dr. Dolph.(No,I didn't take it three times ... it was team-taught.)That was my first exposure to what psychology was actually about, and I decided I'd never make it in that field. As an adult I found myself seeking counseling for a broken heart. Director of Counseling Sandra Millikin Entner'59, 'though not a psychologist, guided me to a better understanding of myself and of God, and I realized how important those with this knowledge are in the lives of others. This issue ofInspire will focus on Cedarville College's department of psychology and alumni who have continued in that field. Although our counseling services operate out of another department, it seems appropriate to include them in this issue which proclaims the importance of being OfSound Mind. \Asa )E3 Faith Linn '83 Director of Alumni Relations Graduate Program Receives Approval The Ohio Board of Regents officially approved a Cedarville College master of science in administration degree program(MSA)on June 18,signaling a new phase for Cedarville College. The MSA,which will begin classes in January, is the College's first graduate-level degree program. Sharon Johnson, director of graduate programs at the College, stated,"We began work in earnest on developing this program over two years ago. My desire has always been to develop a graduate program that would have an impact for Christ among the business, educational, and nonprofit leaders throughout the Miami Valley area. Our program is both academically and spiritually unique— bringing together the best of professional practice and biblical perspectives." Offered through evening classes, the MSA is a multidisciplinary administrative degree with a core of administrative courses and specialized courses in organizational leadership and communication, educational administration, education curriculum and instruction supervision, and nonprofit administration. Both of the education concentrations meet licensure standards of the Ohio Department of Education. The program is targeted at employed adults who have a successful record of experience in either education or business careers. Business and governmental managers as well as principals and curriculum supervision specialists are encouraged to attend For more information about the MSA program, call 1-888-CEDARVILLE or e-mail gradprogq_Pcedarville.edu. 2FALL 1999 Career CareerNet Benefits C areerNet, the Career Services link to alumni and parents, continues to prove beneficial to both the institution and alumni. It is especially exciting to see how CareerNet has benefited students by opening up and refining recruitment efforts on our campus. Jeff Hock '97, an engineer at Procter & Gamble, is just one alumnus who has been very involved with CareerNet. He has been instrumental in helping to prepare our students for the very aggressive application process at P&G and has urged P&G to attend Career Link days on campus. Jeff has visited campus several times to work with Career Services, the engineering department, and students. During his visits, he has given students advice on how to interact with recruiters from major international organizations how to handle a pressure-oriented interview process, and how to professionally present themselves. While many alumni and companies could be mentioned, Jeff is truly an example of an alumnus who has jumped in "feet first" to assist our students and graduates in their career pursuits. As more alumni follow his lead, this sort of "networking" can only continue to enhance Cedarville's opportunity to place students in quality professional and ministry organizations.
