The Packard Family In the Packard Home School, Terri (Smart) ’82 and her husband, Larry, strive to provide a well-rounded education for their children. To do so, they incorporate academics, music, work, and service. Academically, the Packards use a unit study program based on the Bible. For music, each family member either plays the piano or sings, and, as a group, they go to churches and present a gospel music program. In the work area, all the children are given responsibilities around the home. In service, they endeavor to help in their community by volunteering at the public library, mowing lawns for those who are unable to do so, and presenting programs at nursing homes. The Harris Family For Donna McHugh Harris '82 of Smithfield, Virginia, what started out as home schooling has developed into a program which benefits not only her family, but many other families as well. The co-op program which she started now offers an enriched educational experience to more than 200 students. Carolyn Bonnell Justice ’75 Carolyn graduated from Cedarville with a bachelor’s degree in elementary education and later expanded her degree to include kindergarten. After many years of teaching and substituting, she began home-schooling her two boys. While home-schooling her oldest son, she took in five other children in the course of the year so that her son would not have to be schooled alone. Because of her experience in special education and individualized education, Carolyn decided to make it her career to teach at-risk children. During any given year, she will work with four to five different children mainly in tutoring situations. Her love of education and helping students in the academic area has kept her in touch with home schooling and helping at-risk children.
