Been There, Done That ... in Russia Rhonda Coventry ’83 wrote to tell us about her unique experience in Russia. In 1996 when a group began refurbishing a 100-year-old organ to give to the Bryansk Church, Rhonda wanted to take part. Directing this project was a professional who builds, repairs, and restores organs. The remainder of the group were unskilled volunteers willing to give of their time. The organ had been obtained years earlier and was lying in a warehouse in pieces. Having about 900 pipes, some wood and some metal, ranging in size from a pencil to almost 16 feet long, the organ would stand more than two stories tall and about 30 feet wide when assembled. After a leisurely ocean cruise, followed by weeks of government red tape, the organ arrived in Russia. In January 1998 a team of five took an 18-day trip to assemble it. With the help of a number of teenagers from the Russian church and some tinsmiths who fabricated some missing façade pipes, Rhonda stated, “We successfully completed our project including a special concert with the choir and new organ. Being the only organ for hundreds of miles around, it is a novelty. People whose curiosity is piqued by the instrument come to concerts, and then hear the gospel preached.” ... in South Africa A 1994 graduate of the Cedarville nursing program, Angela Hartman graduated in 1997 from Case Western Reserve University with a master of science in nursing degree and a family nurse practitioner certificate. Since that time, she has been working as a family nurse practitioner in Kendallville, Indiana. In 1998, Angie enjoyed the opportunity to work for four weeks as a nurse with Mercy Ships on the M/V Anastasis , in Guinea, West Africa. Angie returned to the ship for Discipleship Training School (DTS) in South Africa from October 1999 to February 2000. “My stay in South Africa took me to the extremes of this First … yet Third … World nation,” Angie wrote.
