Inspire, Fall 2000
Engineering Students Earn High Honors Spring Quarter 2000 provided another opportunity for Cedarville engineering students to excel on state, national, and international levels. Students gained recognition in the following competitions. American Society of Mechanical Engineers (ASME) Region V Student Conference Senior Jason Covill won first place in the Old Guard Oral Presentation of the conference. Covill, a mechanical engineering major from Nottingham, New Hampshire, competed against approximately 20 representatives of other schools from Michigan, Ohio, Ontario, Pennsylvania, and West Virginia in the Grand Rapids, Michigan contest. Covill’s presentation explained the design, analysis, and fabrication of a bicycle caddy for severely handicapped children. Designed by Covill and seniors James Murdock (Brighton, Michigan), Matt Plaatje (West Chester, Ohio), and Shane Sevo (Belleville, Michigan), the caddy provides special structure and support for handicapped children. Covill is scheduled to take the bike caddy presentation to the national ASME competition in Orlando, Florida in November 2000. Computer Science International Design Competition A Cedarville design team ranked among the top 20 of more than 180 teams from around the world at the first IEEE Computer Society International Design Competition (CSIDC). The CSIDC 2000 Health Care Information-Appliance Project challenged undergraduate students to create a compact, special- purpose computer-based device which would help people become more involved in their own health care. The information appliance (also called a medical data device) developed by the Cedarville team allows patients, doctors, and medical personnel to quickly retrieve any part of a person’s medical history, including physical features, contact information, allergies, and existing medical conditions. Additionally, with the proper authorization, the handheld device allows access to a complete summarized medical history or complete medical records for any particular day. As one of the top 20 teams, Cedarville ranked alongside institutions from Bulgaria, Canada, China, Colombia, Czech Republic, Hong Kong, India, Lebanon, Mexico, Poland, Russia, Slovakia, and the U.S. in the competition. Cedarville’s team members included junior electrical engineering majors Roy Mwangi of Nairobi, Kenya; Jonathan Neu of Logansport, Indiana; and Micah Thiery of Wilmington, Ohio. Also on the team were juniors Phil Ausfahl, a management information systems major from Peoria, Illinois, and Jud Neer, a mathematics major from West Liberty, Ohio. The team was advised by Dr. Tom Wailes, associate professor of electrical engineering. For more information about the competition, visit http://computer.org/CSIDC. Ethanol Vehicle Challenge The Cedarville Ethanol Vehicle Challenge team received a citation from the Ohio State Senate for their success, determination, and motivation in this year’s Ethanol Vehicle Challenge competition. The group, represented by Jonathan Fuge (Landisville, Pennsylvania), Nelson Lewis (Salem, Oregon), and Aaron Roth (Jackson, Missouri) also had their ethanol- converted Chevrolet Silverado and Malibu on display at the Biofuels Workshop in Columbus, Ohio. Society of Automotive Engineers (SAE) SuperMileage Midwest A team of Cedarville engineering students (shown below) took first place in the annual SAE SuperMileage Midwest competition. Achieving 632.21 miles per gallon, the Cedarville vehicle showed the highest mpg in the collegiate division, topping the performance of schools such as the University de Sherbrooke (Quebec, Canada) and the University of California at Berkeley. 6 Fall 2000 Dr. Larry Zavodney and team members Jeff Barrons (Caro, Michigan), R.J. Bouwens (Wayland, Michigan), Steve Page (Machesney Park, Illinois), Jonathan Fuge (Landisville, Pennsylvania), and Andy Vargo (Grapeville, Pennsylvania) are shown here with their car Eklektos. Fall Bible Conference Features MacDonald Cedarville’s 2000 Fall Bible Conference will feature Dr. James MacDonald, the senior pastor of Harvest Bible Chapel (Rolling Meadows, Illinois). The conference series will take place September 18-22. MacDonald is the founding pastor of Harvest Bible Chapel, having previously served as assistant pastor at churches in Ontario, Canada and Arlington Heights, Illinois. Born in London, Ontario, Canada in 1960, James received his master’s degree in 1988 from Trinity Evangelical Divinity School in Deerfield, Illinois and his doctorate from Phoenix Seminary in 1996. MacDonald has extensive retreat and Bible conference speaking experience and is a member of the board of directors of Pioneers, an international missions ministry headquartered in Orlando, Florida. MacDonald has focused his itinerant ministry in the area of men and the needs they face. His doctoral research, called “Men at War,” resulted in a ministry to aid men in self-disclosure of personal sin. MacDonald’s teaching, which emphasizes the precise exposition of God’s Word and its practical life application, can be heard on the daily radio broadcast, “Walk in the Word.”
