Inspire, Fall 2003
Alumni Association News 12 Fall 2003 2003 Alumni Scholarship Recipients At Honors Day in April 2003, 12 students received alumni scholarships. Interest generated by the Alumni Scholarship and Grant Endowment Fund provides a scholarship for an outstanding freshman, sophomore, or junior student (or in rare circumstances, an outstanding senior) enrolled in each academic department. The following are the students’ biographies and notes of appreciation, which were written in April 2003. Biblical Education A native of Berlin, New Jersey, Michael Webster is involved in Open Heirs evangelism and Castle Knoll nursing home ministry. The junior preseminary Bible major also participates in the music ministry at Grand Heights Baptist Church and in a Desiring God discipleship group. He is considering attending seminary following graduation, with an eventual goal of vocational ministry. I would like to thank the alumni for providing this scholarship. It is wonderful to see the past students of Cedarville continuing to support and encourage the growth and well-being of Cedarville and its current students. It was a surprise and encouragement for me to receive this award. Thank you! Business Administration A junior finance and management information systems major, Aaron Sattler was part of the Dr. Dixon Bobblehead project with which many alumni may be familiar. The Warminster, Pennsylvania native also has been a yearbook staff member, a SIFE Junior Achievement tutor, and an Open Heirs evangelism participant. I want to say thank you to the alumni who are always so encouraging and supportive of the student body. Thank you for this award and your commitment to Cedarville. Communication Arts Teresa Myers was studying abroad in Sevilla, Spain during Spring Semester, but when she was on campus, she was involved with the debate team, Extra Mile ministry, and Big Brothers/Big Sisters. The junior comprehensive communication arts major is interested in attending law school and eventually working in family law. She hails from Goshen, Indiana. Thank you for giving back to the students at Cedarville. I am grateful for the generosity of the alumni shown by this scholarship. This contribution to help further my education is really appreciated. God bless! Education Heidi Neuhart, an Avon, Indiana native, would like to eventually teach fifth or sixth grade. A sophomore middle childhood education major, she is active in the Awana ministry of her local church and in tutoring at Cedarville High School. She is also part of a prayer team at Cedarville University. I am very grateful to the alumni for awarding me this scholarship. Thank you so much for the encouragement your generosity has been for me and my family. Engineering As a junior mechanical engineering major, Brian Montague is part of the Solar Splash boat design team and Tau Beta Pi, the engineering honor society. Brian also is a member of the Delta Omega Epsilon service organization and is active in his local church’s Awana program. His post-graduation plans include marrying April Carley, a Spring Arbor University student, and working for an engineering firm in his hometown of Jackson, Michigan. Thank you to all the alumni who made this scholarship possible. I am grateful not only for the financial help, but also the honor of being selected for such an award. Thank you again for investing in the lives of current Cedarville students by providing for this scholarship. Exercise and Sport Science An NAIA All-America Scholar-Athlete, Julie Stauffer was part of the 2003 Lady Jackets basketball team which recently earned third place in the NAIA Division II Nationals. She is a junior multi-age physical education major and would like to someday pursue a master’s degree, teach physical education, and minister to people through sports. The daughter of missionaries, Julie grew up in the Philippines but calls Fort Wayne, Indiana home. I really appreciate the alumni generously giving this scholarship to me. I feel blessed to know that former Cedarville students care about us current students and want to help us through school by their financial gifts. I know that without the scholarships I have received, I would not have been able to afford school. Language and Literature Sophomore English major Michael Lyons plans to pursue an M.Div. at seminary and then work in inner-city ministry. The Cincinnati, Ohio native is already an active participant in inner-city ministry, Open Heirs evangelism, the Discipleship Council, and the Advisory Seven. Thank you for your encouragement by this scholarship. I appreciate your desire to give back to Cedarville University and your desire to honor the Lord through your gift. May our God bless you in return for your service to Him. Music Sophomore keyboard pedagogy major Lauren Shackelford looks forward to someday opening her own piano studio. Her goal is to nurture a love of music and the arts in her students. Lauren’s current activities include concert chorale, piano ensemble, Awana, teaching private lessons, and serving as church pianist. Lauren is from Bolling Air Force Base near Washington, D.C. Thank you very much for honoring me with this award. Your interest and generosity are inspiring examples of love to Cedarville’s student body. I am deeply grateful for your support through this scholarship. Nursing Pediatric oncology, pediatric intensive care, and neonatal intensive care are all areas of interest to junior nursing major Amanda Slagle. Amanda hopes to eventually become a full-time missionary nurse in an orphanage overseas and perhaps get an M.S.N. in pediatric nursing. The Jackson, Ohio, native has taken part in the Christian Nurses Association, Open Heirs evangelism, and a missions trip to Albania. I count it a great honor and privilege to have been awarded the Alumni Scholarship in Nursing. I would like to thank the alumni who have funded this scholarship, thereby providing the funds necessary for me to pursue the passion for nursing that the Lord has given to me. Thank you for your ministry of generosity.
