Holz ’73 recently shared what has been going on in his life since he first attended Cedarville more than 30 years ago. Carl came to Cedarville in 1965, but his studies were interrupted by four years of active duty in the U.S. Navy. He served in the Vietnam War from 1967 to 1971 and became a decorated disabled combat veteran. His many awards from the U.S. and Vietnamese governments include the Silver Star, Bronze Star with V, Bronze Star, Purple Heart, Republic of Vietnam Medal of Honor 2nd class, and Republic of Vietnam Cross of Gallantry. After returning to Cedarville and graduating, Carl went on to earn his master of divinity degree cum laude from Grace Theological Seminary. His ordination as a General Association of Regular Baptist Churches minister was followed by his commissioning as a first lieutenant in the U.S. Army in 1977. Carl entered active duty and was promoted to captain in 1977. Carl served as an Army chaplain in New York, Texas, West Germany, Crete, and New Jersey for a decade. In 1982 he took on a new role as chief of a curriculum development division in the Army Chaplain School. There he prepared coursework for all new chaplains. In 1983 he was appointed to oversee the entire spectrum of education for all Army chaplain assistants. He resigned in 1986. In 1988 Carl earned a master of theology degree at Princeton Theological Seminary. While serving in the Army as a professional writer and editor and acting as pulpit supply in New Jersey churches, Carl earned a doctor of philosophy degree in biblical studies from Pensacola Christian College. Although Carl retired from the Army in 1998, he began to focus his attention on Bible college and seminary development both in the U.S. and abroad. This resulted in his two-year appointment in 2000 as a trustee and North American director for library acquisitions for Sofia Bible University in Bulgaria. In 2000 Carl was awarded an honorary doctor of literature degree from Sofia Bible University. That eastern European influence resulted in the Central Christian University awarding him an honorary doctor of religious letters degree in 2001. With that came an honorary appointment by which Carl became a Fellow, Christian Fellowship International (FCFI) in 2001. In 2004, Carl was awarded an honorary doctor of divinity degree from the South Florida Bible College & Theological Seminary.
