Freshman students compete in the first cardboard canoe race across Cedar Lake during homecoming weekend. The event becomes an annual tradition and draws entries from other academic departments. Through the years, students are challenged with tougher guidelines to keep the event competitive. (Read more about this year’s canoe race on page 16.) 1994 The first class of 24 engineering majors graduates — eight electrical and 16 mechanical. 1995 The engineering major receives accreditation through ABET, Inc., the recognized accreditor for college and university programs in applied science, computing, engineering, and technology. Accreditation is retroactively applied to the first class of graduates in 1994. Ke y milestones
