The month of January found some Cedarville area residents lacing up their walking shoes to take part in a race walk clinic, led in part by Jill Zenner ’97 . Jill, who set an American record for race walking, worked with Olympic Trial Coach Vince Peters and athletes Cheryl Rellinger and Steve Pecinovsky to present a “learn-by-doing” approach to race walking. Different from speed or power walking, race walking is an Olympic sport that combines a unique blend of endurance and technique to propel the walker at amazingly fast speeds. For many, Olympic-style walking provides an attractive alternative to the hard, pounding forces prevalent with jogging and the boring workouts of stationary machines like rowers and bikes. Jill, who can walk a mile in less than 7 minutes, assisted seminar participants in learning the benefits of low impact exercise and the technique styles of Olympic-caliber walkers. The seminar was hosted by the Cedarville University Men’s and Women’s Track Teams. I want to serve their needs and strengthen their connection to Cedarville. I also hope to advise and assist the University administrators, faculty, and staff in focusing attention on minority issues and concerns.”
