Inspire, Spring 2002
From the Director’s Chair L ast week as I met with Delta Alpha Epsilon (DAE), our student alumni organization committed to building relationships through serving, I was touched by these students and their commitment to prayer. We gathered together to pray for alumni who had submitted specific requests and then wrote notes of encouragement to each of them. That alone could be seen as impressive. The very fact that college students would take the time to get on their knees and pray for folks they don’t know and then write them personal notes is indeed “unique” in most college or university settings. However, when they took prayer reminders back to their dorm rooms so they could continue to pray for these alumni, I have to admit that I was inspired. Prayer has always been a significant aspect of the Cedarville University culture. From canceling classes for Day of Prayer, to rallying around the flagpole at dawn, to dorm meetings, to gathering in small groups on September 11, 2001 … the Cedarville family is a praying family. In working on the CU Web site redesign, the question came up as to whether the “prayer/praise” link should be on the home page. It didn’t take much discussion to determine that this is one of the things that defines who we are. And, in case you’re wondering, that link isn’t just for show. The prayer requests listed online are visited regularly and prayed for. In fact, that’s one of the ways DAE became connected with the alumni for whom they prayed. This issue of Inspire not only reminds us of the importance of prayer, but also encourages each of us to continue along the road of prayer that was such an important part of the Cedarville experience.
