Inspire, Spring 2002

4 Spring 2002 What’s Abuz z z z z z z z z President’s Pen s alumni, what comes to your mind when I say “Cedarville culture?” Chapel, family, quality? I hope you would include prayer. “If you ever have a need the rest of your life, call me collect!” That statement has generated lots of collect and non-collect calls the past 24 years. Most are prayer requests to my home and to my office at all hours of the day and night. Mrs. D and I have even been awakened past midnight by a grad with a burdened heart who needed prayer. Those needs, as appropriate, are taken to the University family as a prayer request in chapel. Prayer has always been a major emphasis in chapel for us. The students know God works when Cedarville prays. During the first chapel each year, I ask members of our family who have unsaved parents to stand. Moms and dads frequently turn to Christ during the following nine months. In recent years, Christian parents have been so impressed with the prayers of our faithful that they have asked us to pray for their parents. Now students stand for their unsaved grandparents as well. The focus on prayer for the unsaved who attend graduation continues to be a big part of our culture. How many “Days of Prayer” did you attend? Those in the student body in 1983 will never forget when we prayed for Joy Patterson (wife of Dennis Patterson ’84, page 12) and how she came under heavy conviction on our Day of Prayer and was subsequently converted. Yes, the prayers of the faithful in our campus family have been and continue to be blessed of God. Only He knows the magnitude of the supplication from the families, alumni, and friends around the world. Let me share with you the story of one friend, donor, and prayer warrior— Bob Miter. Never having married, Bob lived alone in Cleveland. God blessed him with the ability to invest and earn money. In his life and death he gave millions to help Christian young people, including many at Cedarville. More importantly, he prayed for our student body. Every year he requested a Cedarville yearbook and prayed for every student, picture by picture, name by name. May our Lord raise up more Bob Miters who are convinced of the power of the prayers of His faithful. Paul Dixon ’94H President A Cedarville Lady Jackets Take Cross Country Championships C edarville University captured its first National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics (NAIA) title in any sport by winning the NAIA Women’s Cross Country Championship in November. Elvin King, who is in his 33rd year as head coach at Cedarville, was voted NAIA National Coach of the Year. Junior Erin Nehus placed third and earned All-American honors at the event; joining her on the All-American unit were juniors Jennifer Tetrick and Heidi Wright. Cedarville claimed the national title without a senior among the top seven runners. The NAIA title followed Cedarville’s winning of the National Christian College Athletic Association (NCCAA) championship and the American Mideast Conference championship, also held in November. Elvin King was tabbed NCCAA Coach of the Year in guiding the Jackets to their fourth overall NCCAA title and their first since 1996. The Presidential Search Committee Needs You! As Cedarville continues its search process for a new president, please join us in prayer for the following specific requests: • Guidance and strength for the Dixons as they look forward to May 2003 • Wisdom and unity for the trustees and for the Cedarville family • A great finish for Dr. Dixon • Guidance for the search committee as they work on this large and time- consuming search process • The new president • Smooth transition to chancellor role for Dr. Dixon
