Inspire, Spring 2005
26 Spring 2005 Delta Alpha Epsilon (DAE) is a student organization that assists CU Alumni Relations in “building relationships by serving.” As part of their ministry (and part of their reward for working so hard all year), this group of students had the opportunity to take a spring break trip in which they met and ministered to alumni and other CU friends. Those on the trip were: Michael Ensslen ’05, Heather Grier ’06, Ryan Rotman ’07, Libby Shortt ’05, Emily Stephens ’06, Bethany Streitmatter ’06, Kevin Vaughn ’06, Mark ’96 and Amy Cartzendafner Button ’97, and Faith Linn ’83. After driving for 18 hours straight, DAE was welcomed to Naples, Florida by David ’84 and Laura McElroy Lindner ’84. Sunday was spent at Center Point Community Church, where DAE met with the youth group in the evening. On Monday, DAE began their service project at Naples Christian Academy (NCA). They painted, cleaned, moved furniture, and ministered in three Bible classes. While the team worked, Libby, Ryan, and Faith represented CU at Evangelical Christian School (ECS) in Ft. Myers. Monday evening brought DAE together with 10 CU alumni ranging in graduation year from 1937 to 2004. Emily and Heather enjoyed getting to know Clarence ’37 and Rachel Gray. Work continued at NCA on Tuesday as Bethany, Kevin, and Faith headed to Southwest Florida Christian Academy (SFCA) in Ft. Myers for a University presentation. Although the group’s trip to Sanibel Island was rained out, it was good to see Alexandria Gyurik ’04, one of the teachers at SFCA. The four-hour drive to Orlando on Wednesday became seven hours due to rain and traffic, and the group was thankful to arrive safely at the home of Paul and Claudia Whitestine Porpiglia ’79. On Thursday, the work began again as the team enjoyed the demolition of an old shed at the Porpiglia home and promptly constructed two new ones. Thursday evening found DAE at Downtown Disney with Amy Bohn ’99 as Faith met with Orlando alumni. Disney World was Friday’s destination! The group visited three parks in 14 hours and is very grateful to the alum who made it all possible. Although they couldn’t join us, Clai and Alicia Baisley Parker ’99 told us about beautiful New Smyrna Beach, and we were happy to spend Saturday there in the sun. A cook-out at the Porpiglias on Saturday evening brought a few more alumni together. After attending First Baptist Church of Orlando, the group loaded up the cars and headed back to Cedarville. Sixteen hours and a few naps later, the students were back to classes at the ’Ville. DAE Spring Break March 4-14, 2005
