New Church Matching Grant Doubles Scholarship Dollars Top-Notch Forensics Contrary to what you might think, the Cedarville University Forensics Team does NOT investigate crime scenes. But they do, however, probe into the science of rhetoric, learning how to best express themselves in various oratory categories. And their recent forensics tournament finishes show that they know their stuff. At Ohio State’s Holiday Frolic Tournament, the Cedarville team won the second place sweepstakes award, topping approximately 34 other colleges and universities. Top performances were led by varsity team member Autumn West ’06, who took first place in rhetorical criticism, and novice team members Karen Williams ’08 and Mallory Fisher ’08, who took first place in novice informative and novice impromptu, respectively. The team upped their results at the 33rd Annual Tower Invitational at Eastern Michigan University, coming in at first place. They bettered 22 other colleges and universities, including Western Kentucky University, Berry College, and Ball State. Karen Williams ’08 took the second place award in the Pentathlon category, which recognizes the best speakers in five events. The team is coached by Matthew Moore ’92 and Derrick Green ’97, who are assistant professors of communication arts. Sweeping Up The Cedarville University Debate Team started the new year off right. In January, the team took the first place sweepstakes in parliamentary debate at the Hillsdale College Tournament in Michigan. In February, the team continued their success with a first place in parliamentary debate at the University of Notre Dame Irish Invitational in South Bend, Indiana. Additional top finishes were made by the varsity duo of Courtney Edmonds ’09 and Mark Miller ’09, who took third place varsity honors and first place novice honors.
