Inspire, Spring 2006
Spring 2006 At the conference, Dr. Heaton presented a session titled “Teaching Math in the Urban Setting.” Kyle Hiestand ’06 and Monique McCoy ’06, both middle childhood education majors, teamed up with him to lead hands-on projects. The Cedarville group had the opportunity to hear from both CSU and national figures on topics such as urban student development and teaching strategies. Dr. Heaton says he hopes that above all else, his students came away from the conference prepared to begin engaging different cultures through being an educator for Christ. He also noted that Cedarville University is pursuing additional collaboration with CSU, including a first-ever joint urban education conference to be held at CU next year for community educators and CU/CSU students. Dr. Tim Heaton’s “Introduction to Teaching” class had a great opportunity to collaborate with a neighboring historically black university recently. Dr. Heaton and 77 of his pupils attended the conference “Reflections on Teaching and Learning in the Urban School Environment” at Central State University (CSU) in Wilberforce. Dr. Heaton feels strongly that education students need to be aware of urban teaching issues. “Urban areas are where the vast majority of jobs are for new teacher education graduates,” he explained. “Due to the very needy nature of students in the urban schools, our students sense a missionary call to these areas to try to make a difference in at least one life, if not more.” Cherie Tryon ’08 and a Central State University student collaborate at the “Reflections on Teaching and Learning in the Urban School Environment” conference. Urban Teaching Opportunities In addition, the Nedra Callan Meritorious Service in Athletics Award was awarded to Dr. L. Delyte “Dee” Morris, adjunct professor of exercise and sport science and assistant women’s tennis coach. For more than 30 years, Dee has had a faithful and supportive ministry in the Yellow Jackets athletics program. Congratulations to all of the honorees! Named to Fame There was more going on at this January’s Alumni Basketball Weekend than shooting hoops! Three alums and one faculty member were honored at the annual Cedarville University Athletic Hall of Fame banquet. The three newest Hall of Fame inductees were: • Krista Pritchard Crary ’93, who ran for the Yellow Jacket cross country and track teams from 1989-93. She was the 1992 NCCAA cross country champion, a four-time NCCAA All-American, and an NAIA All-American in the marathon. • Diana Jones ’76, a two-year Lady Jacket athlete from 1974-76 in the sports of basketball, tennis, and field hockey. She was especially known as a playmaking guard on the hardwood who still holds the school record for most assists in a single game with 12. • Dale Shaw ’80, a cross country athlete from 1976-80. He was the 1978 NCCAA cross country champion and a three-time All-American, and he led Cedarville to two NCCAA titles.
