Inspire, Spring 2007

Spring 2007 inspire The Cedarville UNIVERSITY Alumni Magazine Volume 17 Issue 3 Director’s Chair A fter not declaring a major my entire freshman year, I finally decided to study broadcasting. That lasted one whole quarter. “Audio Control Techniques” was all it took for me to rethink my decision. It wasn’t until years later that I realized the great responsibility of speaking (sometimes unscripted — definitely not my gift) to an audience. It takes incredible discernment to determine what message should be communicated. Many alumni share that they developed critical thinking skills at Cedarville, and I am so thankful that God has placed some of these people in key “gatekeeper” positions. Paul Gathany ’63 (page 26) has spent his whole career building a Christian radio network that God has used to bring people to Himself. Paula Faris Krueger ’97 (page 24), though a household name and face in Chicago, understands the need to seek God for wisdom and strength in her daily life. Jim Houser ’91 (page 20) uses his behind-the-scenes influence to minister to and encourage audience members. These and many others choose daily to be lights in our world by being integral parts of packaging a message. It makes me consider how much time I put into the messages I communicate or those of which I am a part. Even though I may not have a large sphere of influence, and even if I just have some say in what we watch on TV, am I acting as a gatekeeper with my friends and family? Am I incorporating critical thinking skills and a heart for ministry into the decisions I make each day? Granted, most of us aren’t on TV, on stage, or planning concerts. But are we serious about making the most of the influence we do have? I have found the stories in this issue very inspiring, and it is our prayer as a staff that you will be challenged to consider your gatekeeping role — big or small.
