But as Cedarville’s school of humanities sought to demonstrate, the campus had much reason to celebrate. Dr. Steve Winteregg, dean of the school, explained, “The 1809 Celebration highlighted the 200th anniversary of the birth year of people who had an important effect on human history and culture, such as Abraham Lincoln, Felix Mendelssohn, and Edgar Allan Poe.” To commemorate these individuals and other aspects of the era, a series of events was planned during the last week of January. The debate team paid tribute to Abraham Lincoln and Frederick Douglas by employing the Lincoln-Douglas debate format for an on-campus discussion of current events. In a public concert, the music department performed Mendelssohn’s Elijah , featuring guest conductor Peter Stafford Wilson. And literature by Poe was presented at a reading sponsored by The Icarus Collective, Cedarville’s poetry organization. Once upon a midnight dreary, while I pondered, weak and weary, Over many a quaint and curious volume of forgotten lore, While I nodded, nearly napping, suddenly there came a tapping, As of someone gently rapping, rapping at my chamber door. “Tis some visitor,” I muttered, “tapping at my chamber door - Only this, and nothing more.” — excerpt from “The Raven” by Edgar Allan Poe Alumna Leads Enrollment Efforts Janice (Warren) Supplee ’86 has been appointed as Cedarville’s vice president for enrollment management and marketing. Since returning to Cedarville in 1995, she has held leadership positions in admissions, external relations, and marketing and most recently served as associate vice president for marketing. Her experience includes 22 years in the areas of communication, marketing, enrollment management, and university relations. She holds an M.B.A. in marketing from Wright State University in Dayton, Ohio, and a B.A. in communication from Cedarville. “Having worked closely with Janice the last several years,” said Dr. Bill Brown, Cedarville president, “I’m excited to watch her leadership and marketing skills strengthen Cedarville as she steps into this position.” Under her leadership, the enrollment management and marketing team will continue its focus on strong enrollments, increased affordability, and clear communication. Despite an uncertain economy, Cedarville’s application volume for 2009–10 continues to track close to last year’s record. The University’s commitment to affordability is demonstrated by a 100 percent growth in financial aid over the past five years. “We are trusting God for His continued blessing on Cedarville,” Janice said. “Every year He leads outstanding students our way. Alumni and friends help to make that happen by spreading the word about what God is doing here. We, as faculty and staff, are then privileged to invest in those students’ lives and equip them for lifelong leadership and service.” “We are trusting God for His continued blessing on Cedarville.
