Inspire, Spring 2011

“Tony Goocey’s going to be a student at Cedarville too,” friends back home told me as I headed off to college. “Sure, maybe I’ll look him up,” I thought, but I was a freshman entering a sea of 1,600 students. What were the odds that our paths would cross? I walked down the corridor of Patterson Hall, scanning the room numbers searching for my own. I read the names of the residents on each door — listed on the door next to mine was “Tony Goocey.” Tony ’86 and his roommate, Greg Lambert ’86, helped me through my freshman year, and Tony introduced me to the world of a nursing student. I often think of our meals in the dining hall, where Tony would delight an audience of college guys with in-depth stories about his gross experiences from the hospital that day. I have since learned that nursing students will talk about practically anything over lunch or dinner, and it seems perfectly normal to them! I am sure almost every alumnus remembers at least one conversation with a nursing student that he would like to forget. Thankfully, our nursing students are leaving a much greater legacy than that. They are making a compassionate, real-world impact on health care in the United States and around the world. Sarah Greenberg ’09 is a U.S. Army nurse caring for wounded soldiers in Germany (page 18). Tom Lawson ’01 walks cardiac patients through what to expect in heart surgery (page 22). Dana Scott ’98 is using her nursing skills to provide a loving home for adopted and foster children with medical needs (page 14). And right here on campus, graduates of our exceptional nursing program are serving as faculty, teaching today’s students what it means to serve patients with Christlike compassion (page 10). This year’s chapel theme, “Real-World Impact,” has challenged us to consider how God might use us to reach His world. We have been reminded of how our alumni — nurses, engineers, teachers, parents, pastors, and so many more — are bringing honor and glory to God in their daily lives. While this issue should encourage you to think about students interested in the field of nursing, we need you to help us identify students in every field who could be successful at Cedarville. Send us the names of three prospective students, and we’ll send you a Cedarville T-shirt. Visit cedarville.edu/names to complete the short, online form, and pray along with us that God will use your influence to equip students to make a difference for Christ as they begin their Cedarville experience. This year’s senior class chose Hebrews 10:23 as the class verse, which ties back to this year’s theme: “Let us hold unswervingly to the hope we profess, for He who promised is faithful.” Praise God for His faithfulness! He desires that we be faithful in making a real-world impact on those around us. Don’t hesitate to contact us and share how God is demonstrating His faithfulness in your life. We love to stay in touch and would consider it a joy to encourage you in your walk with Him.
