Finding a New Way to Serve “Life is an experience you build on,” said Jeff Subra ’83, and he follows his own advice. A metal fabricating business owner in Paradox, New York, Jeff is also a volunteer firefighter and critical care emergency medical technician (EMT). And he is in his final semester in school to become a registered nurse (RN). Not bad for a man who used to wince at the sight of blood. Jeff’s interest in health care is leading him toward his ultimate goal — missions. He traveled with an ABWE international health care ministry team to Haiti following the 2010 earthquake. Among his team of nine, he was pleasantly surprised to find two other Cedarville alumni, Beth (Wittlinger) Pfuelb ’85 and Lois (Brooker) Tejada ’66, both RNs. The team held clinics in two remote mountain villages in partnership with the Baptist Haiti Mission, where one of the few functioning hospitals remained following the quake. In January 2011, Jeff spent nine days in Honduras doing similar work with a group of medical students from the University of San Diego. His team saw 1,500 patients in six days. The trip provided Jeff with valuable insight as he realized how extreme poverty limits people’s access to basic health care. As a result, his desire to pair his nursing skills with his heart for ministry has deepened. Jeff’s wife, Cheryl (Schuler) ’83, is also a trained EMT, and together they plan to seek more opportunities to volunteer with medical missions teams. “You never know how God will use you and your experience,” he said. “When I see people in immediate need, it’s satisfying to know I can help.” You may contact Jeff at jsubra@specialtystainless.com. alumni spotlight alumni spotlight alumni spotlight alumni spotlight alumni spotlight alumni spotlight alumni spotlight alumni spotlight In Memory We extend our condolences to the families and friends of these dear loved ones.
